Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 4, day 22 of Turn 5
E'rae had been at the Hold for a solid candlemark. He'd already visited with family and ate a good meal. Leith was resting on the fireheights with the watchdragon. As he wandered around the Hold, E'rae saw some people he knew. "Afternoon Zelda. Aye, everything's fine at the Weyr."
Terse greetings and polite replies continued until he finally crept to the trees above the cliffside, standing there and looking out over the land he'd memorized as a youngling.
"It's a lovely view."
He would have been startled had he not heard the man approaching. "Aye it certainly is, though nowhere near what it is from the air." Putting his hands inside his trousers, he didn't move, not bothering to challenge whoever it was. If they had dishonorable intentions, he'd reach his beltknife quick enough.
"I'm very jealous of you dragonriders for your freedom of movement and your aerial views." Zanen moved around to the rider's left so they could see each other.
E'rae glanced then, but he didn't recognize the man. "It is a benefit. Who are you?"
"Zanen." He offered his hand.
E'rae took it then released the man. "E'rae. I used to live here."
"Ah. I moved in about a turn ago." And although it was pleasant here, he was starting to think it might be past time to move on.
"Where from?" E'rae shifted his weight from foot to foot, displacing a few rocks that slid down the side of the cliff.
Zanen chuckled. "All over. I travel where my feet take me, although that's gotten harder since Thread returned."
"I can imagine. So what brought you here?" E'rae was mildly curious, though he knew the man wasn't with a trader train.
"They were having some trouble with felines coming near the outlying holds last turn. I came to help them out. I've got some experience with hunting and tracking, and feline behavior." The solutions he'd helped come up with seemed to be working. The felines hadn't come back this turn.
"You probably know my father, then, the Hold tanner." Eamis was getting up there, but he was still a formidable man. "I'm a hunter myself, though I don't get out as much as I used to before I impressed. Course Leith does make it easier sometimes."
"Eamis? You're his boy? He's mentioned you a few times."
"That's me." E'rae scratched his chin. "So do you fish at all or do you just hunt big game?"
"I fish," Zanen said. "It's a pleasant way to spend time, on occasion."
"There's good stock in the lake." E'rae grinned, thinking of the afternoons he'd spent that way once his chores had been finished.
"Sure is. I think there's some days I've fed half the Hold on my catch." He chuckled.
E'rae once again glanced at the sun. "You know..I have to be getting back but..whenever I get a few candlemarks, maybe I can head back this way?" It was refreshing to speak to someone who had the same calling as he did.
"Sure. I wouldn't mind some company." Zanen smiled.
"Good day to you then, Zanen." Taking his leave, the bluerider carefully picked his way down the cliffside to the path cut through the stone.
