Briata

Briata

Surprised, the young woman finished speaking with one of her charges before straightening to receive the flit who had appeared. Recognizing the creature, she smiled. Taking a message from the female's leg, she gave her a small treat, then sent her away. Opening the message, Parale was eager to read Briata's neat script.

Dear Parale,

I hope this note finds you well. I believe it would be best you not show it to anyone as I do not wish you to incur the anger of Lord Ishek should he find out about our correspondence.

T'vanen has brought me to the Weyr. It is enormous and very strange compared to what I am used to. At the same time, it holds its own charm, though I think I will always be a holder at heart. I just received my things this morning and words can not express my gratitude to you for the help you've given me. If there is any way I may repay your kindness, please do not hesitate to ask and I will do what I can for you.

I have been placed in some quarters, private ones. I had expected to have to share a room, but that is not the case. It is pleasant in some aspects and lonely in others. At least I have Jewel here to keep me company. She seems to enjoy the Weyr and has taken a particular interest in the dragons. I have found her with them quite a bit, though she never hesitates to return to me when I call her. She's a bold little thing and has no pause in exploring every nook of the Weyr.

How are things with you? I hope no one has questioned you about me. If they do, you must answer as you see fit. I doubt they can take me away from the Weyr by force - I just do not wish to get you into trouble. I have been thinking of you a lot the last sevenday or so and it troubles me to think I might bring you trouble.

I still wear the necklace you gave me. It reminds me of you and the friendship you have shown me in the short time I was at Garnet Valley. I hope someday you can come visit me at the Weyr. Until then, I fear letters are all we have. Please let me know how you fare and of the news of Garnet Valley. I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely, Briata

--------------

Parale poured over the letter once she was alone in her chambers. When she was finished, relief washed over her. Briata was well and had gotten her things.

Sitting down, she hastily wrote a letter. She'd never been one for scribing, but she tried to fit as much information into the smallest amount of lines that she could.

*******
Cousin Riedel,

I am glad you received everything safely. I've never ventured to the Weyr myself, but am glad you enjoy it. Perhaps things will be better for you there.

Things on my end are fine so far. I've managed to elude notice. Of course so many here are indebted to me or related to me, it makes it rather a non-issue somewhat. Don't worry, I'm not foolish enough to tell anyone nonetheless.

Everything here is much the same. I've managed a new skirt-an indigo one. Very nice. No one knows yet where you are. If they do, they haven't spoken of it, or even of you leaving to me. I heard a rumor you were on vacation to see cousins up north. Be careful.

Parale
--------------
Hastily scrawling the name Riedel on the message, Parale set about finding a runner to take it to the Weyr or perhaps a dragonrider on errand.

When Briata received the message, she smiled at the notation of the name. Riedel, was it? Well, it was certainly better to be safe than sorry wasn't it? She sat down and read the letter, then leaned back in the chair to contemplate it. She was glad that Parale had escaped notice and she hoped it stayed that way. The young woman took out a bit of parchment and a pen and began to write a note in return,

"Dearest Cousin,

I am glad to hear that you are well. I had feared you might have gotten into trouble and I sincerely hope that you remain out of it. I know you are not foolish at all, but we all make mistakes and I simply do not wish you to suffer anything because of me.

The Weyr is enormous, much bigger than the Hold and so strange. I think I will get used to it, it will simply take some time. If you wish to visit, I'm sure that can be arranged. If anything happens and you wish to leave, please contact me and it will be done.

The skirt sounds lovely. If I were there, I would help you embellish it. Perhaps you can visit some time and show it to me.

The rumour is rather funny - I do have relations up there, but no one I know well enough to visit.

Please keep in touch.
Riedel"

Parale smiled when it arrived, taking the next letter into her chamber to read. When she finished, she thought about what else to say, then decided perhaps it would be best to wait for a bit before sending another message.
