Better be bold

Writers: AL, Paula
Date Posted: 4th September 2009

Characters: U'das, J'ren
Description: J'ren has some concerns considering hidework.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 1 of Turn 5

"U'das, sir?" J'ren rapped upon the door as he spoke. In his other
hand he clutched a stack of hides, not huge, but made up of more than
a couple of pieces. The stack had been getting larger over the months
that passed and J'ren wasn't sure how to broach the subject. But, he
was doing to do that just the same.

"J'ren, get in," U'das replied and rubbed his temples. He was getting
a headache.

"Yes sir." J'ren didn't waste any time but stepped inside the office
and closed the door behind him. He stood there, gazing at his
wingleader. "Problem sir?"

"All this hidework gives me a headache," U'das replied. He gestured
the 'second to sit down.

J'ren slid into his chair and held up the small stack he held. "I'm
afraid all I have is more to add to it. Actually, sir, I wanted to
talk to you about this."

"Oh?" U'das asked.

"Yes." J'ren put the stack of hides on the desk, then slid them
across toward U'das. When he spoke, his tone was gentle. "I found
several mistakes in these hides, sir."

"Ouch," U'das winced. "Let me see them," he asked.

"They're right there." J'ren motioned to the hides he had already
passed over to his wingleader.

U'das took the pile and went through it. He groaned. "You're right. I
can't understand how they slipped past me. I glad you noticed them
now, before they ended up on Weyrleader's desk."

If that had happened, it would have not only reflected badly on U'das
but on himself and J'ren wasn't going to allow that. "Sir, forgive my
boldness, but this is happening more and more often."

"Feel free to be bold, it's better than tip-toeing around it," U'das
said. He took off his reading glasses, looked at them, pinched his
nose bridge and sighed. "Maybe I need new eye-glasses."
He had noticed how the writing on hides tended to get blurred after a
while when he did his hidework.

"It might be wise to look into it." J'ren concurred. "I think that
is the source of the mistakes and perhaps of these headaches you've
been getting."

"I'll make an appointment with the healers," U'das promised. "I wonder
if that pretty young eye-specialist is still here..."

J'ren's face cracked into a grin. "There's at least some motivation to
go, eh?"

"Yes," U'das agreed with a chuckle.

"In the mean time," J'ren stated with a cough. "I shall be extra
diligent in regards to the work and let you know of anymore issues."

"Thank you, J'ren," U'das said.
