Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 22 of Turn 5
The bluerider had finished seeing to Leith's needs. Walking down the corridor, he kept the small girl's hand in his own. He had promised to drop her off at the creche for his sister, her normal fostermother.
Werenn looked up askance at her father from time to time as they walked. "Dad, do you have thread today?" She worried about her father dying in a fall, especially after seeing the awful score on his body.
"No, not today, but I do have a wing meeting." He was sure it was about the changes in drills that were coming.
"Have a good meeting then," Werenn offered before they reached the creche and walked inside the entrance.
"Excuse me." A soft voice called out and Briata gave E'rae a small smile. She motioned to the door in front of which E'rae was standing, a silent request for him to step aside so she may enter.
It took him a moment, but then he reacted automatically and moved aside. Werenn, on the other hand, turned and spied Briata. "Oh hi Miss Lady!"
"Hello Werenn. It's just Briata." The former Lady Warder gave Werenn a smile. "It's good to see you." She looked to E'rae. "Is this your father?"
"Yep. He's a bluerider." Werenn said that with pride. She knew her Daddy saved Pern.
E'rae looked down a moment, embarrassed slightly by his daughter's tone of voice. "Good day. I'm E'rae."
"Yes, I can see that." Briata's gaze swept over E'rae's knots. "A very brave bluerider," she added. Dragonriders had to be to face Thread.
Unsure of what to say, E'rae thought about something else. "Briata..what an unusual name. Are you named after the Lady at Garnet Valley?" He'd gone to the wedding feast, but he didn't remember what the woman looked like. He'd imbibed a bit heavily that night.
"I am...I am not." How could she be named after her? Briata wasn't that old and surely people knew that the Lady at Garnet Valley wasn't very old either. Didn't they?
"Ah well. My father still lives there." E'rae gave Werenn a pat, then said goodbye to the girl. She took off, planning to talk to her friends.
"He does?" The likelihood that Briata knew the bluerider's father was very small, but she couldn't help but ask, "What's his name? Does he hold rank?"
"Eamis, he's the tanner." E'rae put his hands in his pockets, watching Werenn as she escaped. "Listen, you tell my sister if she ever acts up."
"Ah, I'm afraid I never met him." He wasn't a master, Briata knew that, and she had never needed to speak to a tanner directly so she didn't know any. "Were you originally from Garnet Valley?"
"Born and raised till I was Searched." His accent wasn't as thick as it had been from over a decade at the Weyr, but it still colored some of his speech from time to time.
"I see." If she told him her father's name, he'd probably recognize it. While Onyx Peak wasn't a major hold, her father was well known among the holders. "Well...I should get to the creche." She gave him a small smile. "It was a pleasure meeting you."
"You as well. Good luck," he smiled as he headed off, not wanting to be late for his meeting.
