"Good Morning, Briata." Taljin said by way of greeting when he finally found her at the creche. They'd arrived the night before, but by the time things had been settled for them, it had been late and he hadn't wanted to impose on his cousin.
"Taljin!" Briata's smile as she turned toward the young man and recognized him. She pulled him into a one armed hug since her other arm was occupied by a child of no more than two. "I was wondering when you would get here. How are you?"
The journeyman blushed slightly as the hug reminded him of his somewhat, but not quite, inappropriate crush he'd had on his cousin when she'd first come to stay with his family. He'd put it out of his mind when she'd married Ishek, but having her body pressed against his for that moment was enough to rekindle the emotions. "We had a long trip but we're doing well. How are you settling in here? I see you've found a place for yourself already."
"I'm doing well, thank you." Briata took a moment to shift the toddler on her hip who stared in silence at Taljin. "How's Talmina? I hope the trip wasn't too hard on her."
Taljin hesitated. Talmina had refused to come and see Briata with him, in fact, she'd thrown a fit, and after the names she called her cousin, Taljin didn't press the issue. "She's her normal self..." he said finally. Briata knew how his sister was, and though she didn't need the details, there was no sense in polishing her up at this point. "The trip was fine though, that man Zanen escorted us."
Briata winced. She had hoped that Talmina would have calmed down, gotten over things, but from the tone behind Taljin's statement, she knew that wasn't the case. "I wish I knew what I did to deserve her contempt."
"You were prettier than her?" Taljin suggested, half in jest. He didn't know what would put Talmina against someone, but the girl found one reason or another to dislike most people in her life.
Briata shook her head. "I never claimed to be." Sighed and glanced toward the door. "I get off for lunch in about an hour. Would you like to eat together? Should we ask Talmina if she wants to join us?"
"I'll ask her, but I wouldn't think she'd change her mind. Will your bronzerider be joining us?" He hadn't actually met the man who had whisked Briata away, but he was curious, and his uncle would perhaps worry less about her if he could relay news that she was being well cared for.
"T'vanen said he would be able to today." Briata stated as she nodded to emphasize her words. "He's very nice. I think you'll like him. Perhaps you can meet some of the other people I've made friends with as well."
Taljin didn't catch any special meaning if she'd attempted any, just nodded as he tried to put the name into his brain so he didn't forget later. He had a problem with names that caused him great embarrassment at times. "I'm sure I will." He was a lucky man and Taljin envied him.
"I'd best get back to the children for now." There was regret in her tone. Talmina was hard to deal with, but Taljin had been nothing but kind to Briata. "But I'll see you at lunch, all right?"
"See you then." The journeyman agreed with a nod. He turned and headed back towards the quarters he and his sister had been assigned. He wasn't looking forward to spending time there.
