Imarre hurried from the candidate class towards the dining hall, where he had agreed to meet Maret. He was late, because the class had dragged on and on. All the other candidates seemed to have questions after questions. Imarre had thought that the matter was rather clear and simple.

He arrived at the dining cavern and stopped on dead tracks. He saw Maret. He was leaning towards other boy (he recognized him as an candidate, but couldn't remember his name), his hand was on his arm and they were laughing. He just stood there and stared. The other boy looked flushed.

Maret did not see Imarre entering the room. He leaded close once more, saying something that only the other boy's ear could catch, and when he sat back and grinned, Maret's face lit up. Imarre couldn't hear the boy's reply, but it seemed to amuse his lover as he threw his head back and laughed. A playful slap to the boy's shoulder might as well have been to Imarre's own face.

Imarre's temper flared, fed with the growing feeling of jealousy and uncertainty. Was Maret already looking around for someone else? All Maret's comments "just go and kiss him" and others like that, flooded back, filling his head with all kind of images of potential infidelity. Fidelity wasn't obviously high on Maret's list of virtues. "How dare you! As soon as I turn my back!" he cried, striding over to them.

The sudden outburst startled both of the young men. They turned to look at Imarre, Maret's eyes narrowing as he saw just who it was. "What in Faranth's name are you talking about now?!" How dare he make such an accusation, and right in public and in front of his friend! Had he no shame at all?

"I'm just a little bit late and you already found someone else to corrupt!" Imarre didn't care if whole weyr heard and saw.

"_Corrupt_?" Maret wasn't even going to pretend ignorance of the fact that was an accusation. "I'm sorry, Tombo, Imarre is rather ashamed of the fact that he slept with a man, and apparently if I hadn't come along he was destined to be a sharding bronzerider or something!"

"Uh... Perhaps I should go," the other candidate said uncertainly, looking between the two.

"I was quite normal before I met you!" Imarre accused, ignoring the fact that he had not been. He had had his suspicions and certain difficulties to go to bath or to swim with the other apprentice lads before too...

"You're normal _now_ you flaming idiot!" Maret shot back, not even noticing as Tombo made a rather quiet and quick exit.

"And you're just sleeping around!" Imarre moved to the next issue on his list of issues.

"Wait, so first you're mad at my because I slept with you, and now you're mad because you think I'm sleeping with someone _else_? Do you have a map to help me follow all the twists and turns in your head? Because I'm lost already!"

"You don't even try to understand where I come from. I'm struggling to settle in and you just shrug my worries off. To you, it's perfectly natural to hop from bed to bed and kiss boys and girls and what-nots! Well, in case you haven't noticed, it isn't so easy to me," the red-head had tears in his eyes now.

And yet again, the water works. "How could I _not_ notice, Imarre? It's all you ever talk about! And in case you having noticed, it isn't easy for me to constantly have to reassure you, even when you're saying very insulting things about me and 'my kind', that you are doing nothing wrong. It's sharding exhausting, Imarre!"

"You don't love me," Imarre's lips trembled.

"Well, you know you make it rather hard. I am trying. I really am." And it was true. Maret felt like he had put more than his fair share of effort into the relationship. "But I can't fix you, and you refuse to let your hide-bound mindset go."

"So it's all my fault now? That does it. We are over! I don't want to see you ever again!" it was anger talking and not his heart. He turned around and ran out. He found a quiet, remote corner to cry his heart out. He was already regretting his hasty, angry outburst.
