Safe and Secure

Writers: Chelle, Paula
Date Posted: 3rd December 2009

Characters: Sarban, Zandan
Description: Sarban and Zandan have their usual meeting to discuss the Hold's security.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 6, day 10 of Turn 5

Putting some of his things away into a drawer, Sarban bent down behind the desk. His office was well lit and the floor had new rushes, making it smell fresh. The Steward was having a good morning and hoped it would continue.

Zandan knocked on the door before stepping to fill in the door frame. "Good morning, Steward," the Captain said with a smile.

"So far so good. Have a seat, Captain. Klah?" Sarban gestured to the chair in front of his desk, even as he reached for the klah pot and the mugs.

"Thanks," the big man replied with a nod and came in, pulling the chair out for himself.

After pouring and setting a mug down for Zandan and then one for himself, Sarban passed around the sweetener and cream. "So what's the news? Any new guards or crimes or craziness?"

"Nothing out of the usual. One of the minor holders reported seeing holdless rabble sniffing around his hold. I thought I could take a couple of guys and go there to shake the bushes so that the ruffians get the message and find some other place to pester."

"Sounds good." Sarban took a drink and leaned back in his chair. "So I've been thinking..what with the traffic down there and whatnot, should we put up a guardpost down by the river?" Sarban hoped it would deter those that might try holding up a riverboat.

"Have the riverboat-people had problems?" Zandan asked.

"Not yet, though we have had issues with people smuggling down the river and that has got to stop." Especially the women..Sarban knew he couldn't have holder women sent down the River. It was easier than escaping to the Weyr.

Zandan nodded. "We can set up a post. It just won't be a very popular assignment."

Taking another drink of his klah, Sarban shrugged. "It is what it is. Maybe we could utilize another watchwher there?"

Zandan shook his head. "Not a good idea. Do you know how hard to handle those beasts are? They require a fully trained beastcrafter or someone from the Blood. Trained canines would work better."

"Then we could put a canine down there." Sarban made a note. "Either way it'll surely make the men of the Hold a bit happier to know we're being vigilant." And it might put down talk of protests.

"Much better, canines can be used during daylight hours too," Zandan smiled.

"Very true. So everything else is fine then? I know the Lord Holder may do an inspection at some point." Shuffling through his schedule hides, he tried to figure out when that was.

"Yes, things have been quiet around here," Zandan replied. Which was nice but a bit boring.

"All right then Zandan, just keep sending your regular reports. That's all I needed for today." Sarban gestured for the man to finish his klah before he left. He was in no hurry.

"All right, see you around, Sarban," Zandan said and after draining his cup, left it to the Stewards desk.
