"Come on, love." The man approached Briata which caused her to back up. Unfortunately, there wasn't much room and she backed right into a wall. He placed one hand against the wall beside her head and leaned upon it, his grin wide. Briata could smell the liquor upon his breath which made her stomach curdle. He didn't wear knots so she couldn't tell what his station was, but he had the swagger and over confidence of the bronzerider stereotype. "You, me, we can have a good time."
"I'm not interested - as I have stated at least twice now." Briata tried to duck to the side, but the man cut her off. He wasn't particularly tall, but he was well built and not bad looking. Briata just didn't want to have anything to do with him, at least not in his current state.
The man leaned closer, making Briata's mouth curl in distaste. "Come on now, give us a kiss."
He hadn't expected the slap. Her hand stung almost as much as the man's face and his expression spread in surprise. There was a distinctive pink mark upon it. The surprise melted away into anger. "Now look what ya done."
R'yin was on his way to visit a young friend of his that had come by the Infirmary with some questions about some of the drill patterns. He made himself available to the younger riders who were slightly unnerved by admitting they didn't _quite_ get it in front of anyone in leadership of the Wing. He was thinking of Briata, oddly, still
wondering over her reluctance to stand with her special gift when he thought he heard her voice around the corner.
He turned the corner and stopped a moment, surprised by the scene before him. Bronzeriders - well not all of them - didn't usually have to stoop to forcing female Weyr residents to be "friendly". But this one appeared to be doing just that.
A muttered growl, nearly, under his breat as he tilted his head toward Briata, ignoring the bronzerider. He knew him, though. J'pil got up to no good with the drudges nearly every other day and Solieira, when pushed, would complain about him to anyone who'd listen. But it was the Weyr...
Still.
"Briata, there you are, lovely. I am sorry I was late for meeting you. I got sidetracked...as usual...Our patients are looking forward to our visit. " He said with a smile, then turned toward J'pil. "Making a nuisance of yourself, are you, J'pil? Again? What _will_ U'das say?" He stopped walking, positioning himself between J'pil
and Briata, very subtly, even though she was still a bit trapped against the corridor wall.
Briata took advantage of J'pil's distraction to shift to the side and stand beside the dragonhealer, then turned to smile at him. "Ah, R'yin, that's all right." Her expression, turned away from J'pil, was one of relief and she mouthed a silent 'thank you'.
J'pil straightened up and lifted his hands in surrender. "Naw...naw. Jus' havin' some fun." Evidently J'pil wasn't so drunk he didn't realise what sort of trouble he'd get into if he didn't listen.
It was lucky that R'yin was the kind of brownrider that most people just seemed to listen to. He was always helping, but never too much. Always willing for a talk or a drink when a fellow rider needed him. He was just a quiet, easygoing, solid rider and it was _easy_ to listen to him. Luckily since R'yin really didn't want to punch the bronzerider, even if he might have deserved it. Besides, he knew J'pil. "Good enough, J'pil. I'll just steal Briata, shall I? We had a prior engagement." He smiled in a friendly way to the bronzerider, and then extended his arm to Briata. "Shall we?"
"Yes, please." And thank you! Briata would be certain to say that after J'pil was out of earshot. She slipped her hand into R'yin's arm and bobbed her head to J'pil in an attempt to be polite, even if he didn't deserve it. When they had gone a ways, Briata sighed and said the words, "Thank you, R'yin. I really did not like what was on that
fellow's mind."
R'yin nodded in understanding, holding her arm for a few minutes longer in case J'pil suddenly suffered an attack of the braves. "Most of the bronzeriders can find willing women without even trying, but some of them just see pretty girls like you and decide you're the one. But usually... mostly.. .they don't mean much harm. They suffer from the belief that their dragon's color makes them utterly irresistable to women!"
"So I have noticed." Briata stated dryly. She glanced back behind her and breathed a sigh of relief. Evidently J'pil had decided not to bother with her since R'yin had 'claimed' her so to speak. "He's gone, and good riddance." The girl wrinkled her nose in distaste, then relaxed and asked, "So are we going to visit your patients?"
Startled, R'yin thought a moment then finally nodded. He released her arm with the news that J'pil was gone but smiled in invitation at her. "If you would like to, please join me. I was making up an excuse to take you away from him, so if you have other plans...." He trailed off, not wanting to force her. But he did enjoy her company, and she helped with his patients too.
"I'm done with classes for the day and there's still time before dinner." Briata wouldn't mind visiting the dragons. While she didn't necessarily want to become a dragonrider, she enjoyed spending time with them regardless. "Excuse, or no, I would love to see them." And it would keep her mind from wandering to more unpleasant thoughts.
"Your wish is my command, Lady." He gave her a grand smile. He really was beginning to enjoy her company. Perhaps that was.. unwise. But he let himself do it anyway.
