Marlo's arm was badly burned. So painful, he couldn't move it. The fabric was sticking to the wounds, making infection a grim reality. The weaver had been working at his loom when the flames had come through, lighting the rushes like a trail and then licking up the furniture and the wood of his loom. The pain was unbearable, but somehow he was still awake. Running out of the building somehow, he didn't know what to do or where to go. He looked a sight. His face was frantic. "I need help! Healer! Healer!" Numbweed, where was the numbweed, was all his mind could put together.
"Water," the elderly woman corrected. "Running water." She gingerly took part of his arm and led him to an external tap on one of the outbuildings not yet involved in the fire.
Marlo blindly followed, trying not to focus on the pain. He could hear noise and shouts. It only barely registered that people were calling names.
"Just sit," the woman said as she turned on the tap. "Before you fall down."
Falling into the seat, he held his arm with one hand. The weaver had been running on adrenaline. As he sat, though, he began to go into shock. Silently staring, he watched her.
"Put your head down, man," she ordered him, putting a hand on the back of his head to guide him if the words made no sense. "What's your name?"
"Marlo," he offered weakly, trying to concentrate on what she was saying.
"Marlo, is this the worst burn? Does anything else hurt?" She couldn't see anything but there was singed and tattered clothing everywhere which could be obscuring other injuries. "I think it's the worst, but I do hurt in other places." Groaning, he finally let go of his control and the pain came through.
"Can you tell me where?" He was breathing, after all, and there didn't seem to be any blood, so it was possible that there was nothing more immediately fatal than burns.
"My legs and my stomach. The flames may have crept up them to get to my arm. I don't really remember. It was all so fast." Marlo stopped talking then.
The woman moved the flow of water so that it covered more than just the man's arm. She would need to get numbweed and blankets for him but as she looked around there were many people moving but few that seemed not to have a purpose in their movement. Where were the children? The youngsters that she could send to get things from the outlying cots that were not involved with the fire?
Exhausted with his efforts to get out of the building, find a healer, and deal with the pain, Marlo closed his eyes. The feel of the water was very nice. He wanted to rest. In reality, the shock was setting in.
"Just stay there," she instructed the injured man, repeating it once or twice more before hurrying away in search of numbweed - or a healer with somewhat more recent training than her own.
