Shall We Eat

Writers: Chelle, Eimi
Date Posted: 4th May 2010

Characters: R'sedel, E'rae
Description: R'sedel invites E'rae to dinner. Despite himself, he accepts in the end.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 4 of Turn 5

"I know this crafter well," R'sedel whispered in the ear of the
bluerider he noticed perusing the stall goods. "He sets a high price,
but he easily backs down if you try to bargain with him." His advice
wasn't so much out of his natural desire to be helpful to others, but
due to an equally natural attraction to the man's broad shoulders.

E'rae turned and recognized the greenrider after a few minutes of
racking his brain. "I didn't really want anything anyway. Was just
looking. I bet I could make something like this myself." He held up
a small beaded belt.

"Oh, are you a crafter?" A man good with his hands? Perfect...

"Well no. My Da was a tanner and I picked up a few things." E'rae
put the belt down and began to wander a bit more.

R'sedel liked a man who was a quick learner. "It's good to pick up new
skills. I'm always trying to learn."

"Aye? What are you doing these days?" He picked up a vase and set
it back down.

"Oh, a little of this, a little of that... Search is slow since there's
no Eggs on the Sands. I've been looking for a new challenge." He
wondered if the bluerider might just make an interesting diversion.

"Mmmm..do you ever go hiking?" E'rae had lost a companion since
the other greenrider had transferred. It was a sore spot since he didn't
make friends so easily.

"Ummm... Not really..." He had never been much of the outdoor type.
"But... I'm willing to try something new." If there was some kind of
reward at the end...

"Well, if you want to meet on the next restday early, I'm sure it'd be
interesting." This day was already half done and he didn't have the
preparations done for a hike that he'd need.

"Yes, interesting..." Just where did he intend to hike? "Of course, as
a beginner, for hiking at least, I would hope that you would take it
slow? Gentle?"

E'rae smiled. The man was a rider who took physical abuse almost
every other day and he was scared of a hike? "Uh sure. There are a
few easier trails around."

"Perhaps we can pick the trail together? I trust you have a map?"

"Not on me but back at the Weyr I do." He was ready to leave this stall.
Scratching his head, he hoped for good weather for the rest of the day.

"Perhaps you could bring it by my weyr tonight and we can share a glass
of wine and choose the route together?" Or do a little exploring if
they felt like it...

E'rae definitely had R'sedel's number. The greener was too obvious about
everything. Sighing, he looked up at the sky, judging the chance of
rain. "Have to sleep for early drills tomorrow, but I can meet you at
dinner."

The greenrider made no attempt to hide his meaning. He liked the men he
was interested to come willingly. "The dining hall can be rather
crowded. How can we pour over a map with soup and ale being spilled all
over the table? Would you bring it to my room? I could arrange dinner
for two."

Sighing, he wondered how best to put this without being rude. "Look
R'sedel, I just don't think you'd like that, with me." He would offer
the hike, but no more.

"Dinner?" R'sedel asked, rather surprised. "Ask my father, I can always
eat."

"I'm sure. I'll be in the dining hall." He turned, making his exit.
"Good day to you."

"Shall I meet you there, then?" R'sedel asked, following him out. He
was not that easily lost. The greenrider might not get the sex he was
hoping for, but he was pleasant on the eyes and would be a nice view
over the meal. "What time?"

"Sixth candlemark." E'rae shook his head slightly, wondering why on Pern
he had answered. Perhaps he really was starving for conversation. After
yelling back, he disappeared into the crowd.
