Notes: Notes: Follows 'RBW: Shall We Eat"

He was a man of his word. He didn't entirely feel comfortable about it,
but he had said he would show up, and so he would. So E'rae was walking
through the Dining Hall, nodding at his wingmates. The bluerider picked
out a seat, but didn't know where the greenrider was.

It didn't take long for R'sedel to find him. "Sorry I'm late. I was
chatting with a friend in the line. Didn't mean to keep you waiting."

E'rae almost half-jumped. "Shells, warn a man before you slip up like
that." Ignoring the looks from some of the riders nearby, he ushered
R'sedel toward an open seat and took another for himself.

"Oh, forgive me, I thought I was expected." The greenrider's smile
didn't falter at all as he took the offered seat.

"Well aye but.." E'rae gave it up and instead asked a passing drudge
for some juice. He didn't want to drink heavy since he was sure he
needed his faculties with this one.

"I was just teasing a little. Don't you smile?" R'sedel asked, more
amused than offended.

"Rarely. Some say it breaks my face." It was so deadpan that not many
would have caught the humor.

Luckily, R'sedel found humor in just about everything. "You remind me
of my brother, though I'm not sure that's quite what I was hoping for."

"Well that's..a good thing I guess." E'rae shrugged and tore into a
grilled wherry breast. "He's a decent guy."

"Why thank you. I suppose I should agree being he's my brother and
all." The greenrider leaned a little closer. "Between you and me,
though, he's got a stick bigger than yours or mine shoved so far up his
arse, I think he uses it to brush his teeth in the morning."

E'rae did crack a smile there. "Well he should. Between him and your
father, we'll never manage another Weyrleader."

"Yes, if you look at K'sedel's other children, you'd hardly think I was
one of them, would you?" R'sedel popped a fingeroot in his mouth.

"Well...maybe you're more like him than you think." E'rae had the man
as Wingleader so he had spent a lot of time studying him. "And there's
always a wild card in the deck."

"Oh yes, that would be me. No one in my family would dispute that. I'm
also called the black ram. I like the sound of that better." The
greenrider gave him a little wink.

"You would." E'rae shook his head and concentrated on his eating for
awhile. In between bites, he looked up to study R'sedel slightly. "What
was it like, growing up here?"

R'sedel shrugged. He wouldn't rightly know! "I didn't grow up here.
My family are fairly new to this Weyr. I didn't come until a couple
turns ago."

"Oh? Where'd you come from then?" That was news to E'rae allright.

"From my mother, of course."

"And where is she from?" Two could play at that game.

"From her mother," the greenrider smiled, bringing his glass of ale to
his lips.

"Riiighhhttt..." Not yet admitting defeat, E'rae tabled that for a
moment, moving on to his juice. He asked for a refill. "Where'd you
Impress?"

"If by 'where'd' you mean 'where _would_' I impress, I'd say just about
anywhere." But R'sedel knew not to carry a joke too far. "But if you
mean where _did_ I Impress, it would be same said Thayan Peak."

"Ahha." He began to work on the refill while he ate what was left on
his plate. "What's your favorite thing to do?"

Could the bluerider really not guess _that_? "Well, I like meeting new
people and hearing their stories, and I love spending time with my
Eniidith, so the perfect combination of the two is going out riding on
Search."

"You get to see a lot of the territory then. That has to be
interesting." Indeed, he had probably met E'rae's family on some of his
trips.

"And it's nice to get out of these stone walls to something other than
drills."

"I escape a lot for that very same reason." He was never one for being
cooped up. Impressing a dragon had made it extremely easy for E'rae
traipse around the continent.

"Yes, but I have a feeling you escape alone a lot," the greenrider said
in a moment of rare seriousness. "Don't you like people, E'rae?"

He shrugged. "People are fine, but quiet is valuable. And often people
don't appreciate things the way I do."

"Such as?" R'sedel asked curiously, biting into a roll.

"The mountains, the streams, the fish, the trees...everything." It was
hard to describe really, the way he felt about the land.

"I think it is unfair to say that people don't appreciate things the way
you do. They might not express it in the same way, but I know many a
rider who came from the land and return to it every chance they get."

"Do you?" He was curious now, watching R'sedel like a feline who had
a rodent caught.

"Me? I came from stone. I can leave it now that I have a pretty green
lifemate to hide behind, but these stones protected me. I may like to
see what else is out there with her by my side, but I love stone, and I
always come back to them." He was sure as a bluerider E'rae could
appreciate that.

"Mmmm..... well enough." He nodded and finished his drink. "On that
note, I need to meet my bedfurs. Morning will come early enough."

Greenrider nodded. "There's no stopping it. I know, I've tried."

"Maybe I'll see you again sometime." As much as he hated to admit it,
the greenrider was growing on him. He was okay to talk to. E'rae turned
and made his exit, disappearing into the crowd.
