Alrog had just sat down to enjoy afternoon klah with his wife. They were
chatting about the day's events when both's firelizards suddenly became
agitated, screeching. Alrog received a brief flash from Lapis, of cold, wet,
dark.
Then he became aware of the rumble. It was so low you more felt it than
heard. The surface of his klah rippled. "What?"
"Arva," Fieayz kept her voice low and calming as she reached out for her
noisy gold flit to calm her. "Shhh, show me what's wrong if you can."
Although the gold might be more intelligent than some, it was a confused
image she showed, more of a wobbly ground shaking even more.
"Something is happening," Alrog remarked, worried scowl appearing to his
face. He managed to coax his blue back to his shoulder.
"And it must be serious if she's this scared by it, and Lapis too." Fieayz
put her klah down. "What do we do now?"
"It's usually the..." Alrog begun and then he was interrupted by loud,
howling noise. "That's mine siren. Something serious must have happened," he
paled.
"Oh Faranth! Do you need to get out there?" she asked of her husband.
"I have to get there to see what's happened. Although they don't probably
let me go down to the shaft. Can you organize the womanfolk in case there's
injuries?" Alrog replied.
"I'll speak to the headwoman," said Fieayz. "And I'll calm this little one
down and get her to take a note to the Weyr, to the Healers there."
Alrog nodded. The main hold also had healers and they were closer, but
Weyr's healer would get to them faster, especially now when snow tended to
block the road to the Garnet valley hold.
"We'll need blankets, and hot drinks."
"Looks like you have it all figured out," Alrog said approvingly.
"It just makes sense," she said. "I just thought 'what would Papa do?'"
Alrog nodded and squeezed her hand encouragingly. She had good head on her
shoulder and she was just perfect Holder's wife. "I'm so proud of you," he
wispered.
"I'm proud of you too," she told him in the same low tone. "But I think you
need to get out there and see what's going on."
"Yes, I think I see the Steward beaconing me," Alrog murmured back to her.
"Come back safe," she told him.
"Don't worry, I'm their precious holder, they won't let me anywhere near
danger," Alrog said, sounding both amused and bit frustrated.
"Later then," she said getting to her feet.
"Probably much later," Alrog sighed and rushed to meet his Steward.
