K'mai

K'mai

Hauling a carisak full of shells he planned to trade with one of the
jewelry makers, E'rae walked through the tunnels of the Weyr. The
bluerider had had a good day. After exercises and wing meeting, he had
practiced a few new maneuvers with Leith and then headed off to make
a deal. Most of the Weyr's crafters knew he was always going out when
he could. Coming around a corner, he dodged quickly to avoid an oncoming rider.

"Whoops, 'scuse me," K'mai said.

"Yeah okay," E'rae hadn't seen that guy before. "Sorry..."

K'mai looked down at the carisack. "Narrowly avoided disaster there."

"Yep got some shells to trade. Hopin' for something good." The shells
crunched together in the carisak, making a curious noise.

"What are you trading for?"

"I don't know. Maybe a necklace for my sister, a knife, or something.."
E'rae knew it all depended on what they had ready.

"Do you do that a lot? Gather shells to trade?" K'mai leaned against the wall.

"Shells, stones, hides, pretty much anything I can get my hands on."
He stopped walking, sensing the curiosity in the other rider. Two hands
were always better than one and he had yet to talk R'sedel into one of
his expeditions.

"Ah, a scavenger then," K'mai teased.

"Of course." It was the perfect hobby for him.

"Do you find a lot of interesting things?" K'mai's natural curiosity
made him want to know more.

"Sometimes. There are a lot of places on this continent where people
haven't been in a long time if they ever have. Course the stuff left from
the Ancients is pretty neat to look at sometimes." They still didn't know
how to use most of it.

"Ah, so you're an explorer too?"

"I like to think so or a naturalist. Either way I like poking about things
out in the beyond." There weren't many willing to go on jaunts like that-
it was boring work most of the time. E'rae liked the quiet.

"That sounds fun, going out where no one else is and digging around to
find something interesting." Maybe not K'mai's usual kind of fun, but
it sounded like it was worth a try.

"Ah yea? Well come by the weyr sometime and we'll see when is good.
My dragon is blue Leith. You can get me that way too." E'rae hoisted the
sack and then turned. "I better be going or I might miss them."

"Ah, yes. Wouldn't want that. See you later." K'mai gave the man a
parting smile.
