Briata

Briata

A message arrived. After the hide was opened, a familiar sprawling script
could be read.

"Cousin,

Such news I have to tell! I am engaged to be wed to a journeyman smith. He
has two daughters that I was fostering. We will go to his home, Sun Stone
Seahold, where I will be setting up my home. The ceremony will be there. I hope everything goes well since I have not known him very long, but he is a kind father.

And as Apeline says, he makes me want to pick up my skirts. His name is
Ioven and I hope you will do me the honor of witnessing the ceremony. My
mother cannot come since there is no way to get her back and Apeline has the children. Please tell me if you can make the journey.

FINALLY,
Parale"

Briata's hands shook as she finished the letter. It was not because she was angry, but rather the intense sorrow that hit her. She and B'lamick could not have married, but they had done as close to such a thing as possible for a dragonrider - they had Weyrmated. In her heart, she had been his wife. But not more.

Some time passed before the young woman could get herself together enough to keep her hands from shaking and write a reply. She even managed to finish the letter before she began to cry once more.

"Cousin,

I would love to come and see your marriage. When and where will it be held? I am happy for you. I wish you the utmost happiness for the rest of your days. Send me word, I will come."

With a deep breath, Briata carefully folded the letter and gave it to her
firelizard. A bit of meat, some caresses, and an image later, the little
gold blinked /between/ and reappeared before Parale.
~*~
Briata having a firelizard certainly made their clandestine message-sending
a bit easier. Parale gave the little queen an appreciative rub or two before she managed to get the message off her leg. Reading it, she smiled with excitement. Briata would come!

She scraped the hide and then wrote as fast as she could, sanding it before
rolling it up and putting it back. She didn't quite know how to communicate
with the little thing. "Go home, please?"

Somehow she managed to get the flit to disappear. Hopefully it went where it was supposed to. Golds were supposed to be smarter than the rest right?

The hide read:

"We leave for Sun Stone Seahold in two sevendays. Then I will begin making
arrangements for the ceremony. It will be next month at the earliest since I have to move, get settled, and make arrangements. Plus there are my two new daughters to think of. Once I get there, I will send you another message with more."
~*~
Jewel did make it home. Beautiful and smart, not a combination most would
put together, but it was true in the case of the firelizard. Briata awarded her pet with some meat then removed the message. Her eyes had reddened with the crying she had allowed herself while the message had been delivered. The little gold chirruped in a manner that was meant to be soothing and she was rewarded with a fond scritching upon her eyeridges. She sniffed, the sound all together rather unladylike, so it was, perhaps, a good thing she was alone. Briata forced herself to pen a reply, her hands a bit more steady than they had been earlier.

Cousin,

I look forward to it. I am sure I will be able to find a ride there. It
will be nice to see you again.

For a long time, Briata sat and stared at the parchment. Finally, she wrote some trivial genial comments to add to it and then sent the message off. Of course, she would have to think of something to do as a wedding gift. A month wasn't a long time, but she could make something small at least. Perhaps....it would give her something else to occupy her hands...and her mind.
~*~
After sending the firelizard back, Parale went about the rest of her chores. It would be good to have at least one person she knew there.
