D'ale

D'ale

D'ale hadn't been pulling the wingleaders chain when he told
him he wanted to look Kenza up. After they'd finished bathing and oiling their
dragons, he'd gone for a bath himself to freshen up. He hadn't seen her since
he'd left three years ago.

Lesora had been threatened by Kenza and so he'd capitulated to her demands in
an effort to keep the peace. Ok for the sake of his little daughter he'd tried
but certainly failed. Kenza was his friend and sometimes lover in addition to
mother of his son. He'd missed her more than he'd let himself realize. He
picked up a good skin of Wine as a peace offering and loped up the stairs to
her Weyr.

"Kenza?" he called from the door.

"Come," she called from the desk where she was examining the new
flight patterns. Kenza wanted to be ready for the drills and battles. She would
do her job, just as she always did. She turned to see who had come to her weyr.

"D'ale?" She asked incredulously at the sight of the figure in her doorway.
Kenza had heard he'd come back, but she had been in the midst of sweeprides
when he arrived. She hadn't seen him since he'd returned.

He walked toward her with a smile. She didn't seem to be upset with him and she
was never one to hide her feelings... much. He showed her the skin of wine.
"I brought a party with me, got any cups?" he said.

"I'd heard you'd returned," she replied simply. Kenza didn't rise,
but she looked questioningly at him. "You don't expect to crawl between
the sheets with me after nearly three turns of not a single word?" She
gave a snort. "But nevertheless, I won't pass up on a cup of wine. Pour
away D'ale."

He laughed a rich baritone sound deep in his chest. "Ah Kenza, direct as
ever." She had a very dry and direct sense of the ridiculous and after all
these years she knew men very well.

"Of course not" he said with delight at her response. "I just
came to see my friend as soon as I could. But you know I'd be more than happy
to scratch an itch. We used to have a great deal of fun doing that." he
sat down across from her desk. "Cups?"

"Aye, that we did, old friend. I hadn't expected you to return. Not a word
in all these turns. What does Lesora have to say about this new move?"
Kenza pulled two cups from her small cabinet and set them on the table.

He poured both cups and smiled as he leaned back and put his feet on the edge
of her desk. "I'm sorry about that Kenza," he started "I tried
to accede to a hold raised staffer's fears about our friendship, not a good
excuse, I know, but it seemed the thing to do at the time." He raised his
cup and saluted her "and I think we both said... good riddance." he
chuckled. "I think Delora will be fostered now, and that's probably for
the best. At least I'll get to have her occasionally." He lifted his chin.
"How are you?"

"I am as I have always been," Kenza replied. "Time passes, some
wounds heal and others do not, but life goes on and we fight Thread each time
it falls. What more is there?" She asked. "I am here, I am
whole," she shrugged a bit at that, "I am strong. I would lead my
wing against our enemy at a moment's notice. My life has been consumed by
Thread. Fighting patterns, drills, and battles. I feel as though I breathe
Thread these days."

"Well then" he said remembering his own days as Wingsecond in this
very wing. "You really do need a party." he looked at her
seriously for a moment. "You've always been strong, Kenza." Then he
had an idea. "Let's go to the beach." he said.

The beach?" she snorted. "You've always had wild ideas, D'ale. What's
the beach have to offer that we can't have here?" She asked, her arms
extended to her weyr. D'ale had always been a bit more of a 'dreamer' than she
was, yet it was something that had drawn her to him many turns ago.

He laughed. Trust her to ask for a list. "Alright My Lady," he said
before he started ticking items off on his fingers. "Waves, Sunsets, warm
breezes, maybe some gitar music if you're really nice." He picked up the
skin of wine. "And the rest of the wine." with a grin he got up and
started walking out toward the edge of the weyr where his brown awaited.
"Are you coming?"

Kenza rolled her eyes at him, but she couldn't quite hide the smile that formed
on her face as he listed off the reasons to visit the beach. When he was
finally finished, she waited, as though pondering his question. "Well, I
guess I could handle a bit of time along the beach with an old friend."
She rose and joined him at the edge of the weyr as Solith hovered near the
larger brown.
