Description: V'con's blue catches the green of someone he can't stand
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 11, day 3 of Turn 5
Opening his eyes, Ch'din made a mental check of what had just happened. He felt...like the happy result of a good Flight. He 'reached' for his petite green but she was still asleep. Behind him silky hair was lightly tickling his back and shoulder. Smiling in remembered pleasure, he turned to see who the mystery man was this time.
V'con was holding still, feigning sleep in the hope that the green's rider
would just get up, grab his clothing and go. Only one thing on Pern would
ever stop him having Cacholetyth chase a green, and that would be if a
family member was her rider. But that wasn't the case today. Faranth only
knew why Ch'din's green had even attracted his blue in the first place.
Ch'din looked closely at the man in his bed, not quite believing his eyes.
"V'con? Is that_really_you?" Feeling vunerable, he clutched the furs to
him.
There was no choice with that, he would have to 'wake up' pretty soon. So
all that was left to him was to sleepily mutter "Uh-huh," and try and get
away will rolling over. "Tired," he muttered.
That did it. True, the two weren't the best of mates when they had both
been Weyrlings, but V'con of all people should have known how confusing it
had been for a young Holder like Ch'din to come to terms with being a
greenrider. To Farenth with the pretty blue rider and all his gorgous
clothes. With a huff close to a sob, Ch'din turned away from V'con.
V'con suppressed a sigh and rolled back over to face Ch'din. "Grow up, it
was a flight."
"Right...right," Ch'din muttered, trying to find his clothes through the fog of tears. "You're right, it was only a Flight...it's not like I've got a lifetime of these to deal with." Seeing a pale blue tunic, he tossed it V'con's way.
"Thanks," V'con grabbed the tunic and began to pull it over his head.
"No problem, is it your making?" he muttered, pulling his trousers on.
"The tunic, yeah," the words were slightly muffled as his head emerged and
arms foudn their way down the sleeves. Shards, why did he have to be chatty of all things?
"It's nice..." he muttered. Shards, this was as bad as the
first time he had gone through a Flight. Fully clothed, he turned back to
the long haired lad. "V'con....that time, when we were Candidates and I used to think so high and mighty about myself. I never said this...I wanted to after I Impressed...but, I'm sorry I was such an arse." He dropped tearful eyes to his own worried hands on his lap and waited for a long deserved tirade from V'con.
"Finally got that stick out from it have you? Honestly, I expected to see it most times you opened your mouth,"V'con said, which he thought was mild
really. After all this this tearful stuff could just be an act. Some
greenriders expected things to be all lovey dovey after a flight, and if it happened to be the right time and the right person a second go was a
wonderful thing.
Ch'din nodded, taking in the words. Nothing he said was harsh, after all,
nor undeserved. Tears fell down his face and into the cupped hand on his
lap, as he thought about the last words he had ever heard from his family,
just after Impressing his beautiful Anyanth.
"She did fly well though," perhaps a back handed compliment. "Cacholetyth is more than happy now."
Nodding and trying to stop the tears, Ch'din whispered, "cheers for that.
She's all I've got now."
Just what he needed, a snivelling little boy. V'con supressed another sigh
as he fastened the belt on his trousers and located his sandals. "Your
wing," he said. "You have your wingmates."
"My new family."
"Exactly."
