Description: Kendale and Cardella meet in the dining hall
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 11, day 8 of Turn 5
He was tired after washing the injured brown rider's dragon. Kendale
had been keeping a quiet eye on the young guy his dad had mentioned.
He wasn't doing much but it seemed most of the bullies were thinking
twice when he was around. He just made it clear that he didn't like
bullying of anyone and he was big enough they paid attention. He
didn't think that singling out Galwen would do him any favors when he
wasn't nearby. So he kept it general.
He walked into the dining hall for his dinner before having to clean
out his part of the barracks. The wherry stew smelled wonderful and he
grabbed a big bowl. His eyes popped when he saw the bubbly pies and
grabbed one nearly burning his fingers. Then after grabbing a cup of
klah and some utensils he found a relatively empty spot against the
wall.
"Good eve to you," Cardella said as she approached the table. "I see
you've already taken to my bubbly pies." Cardella had grown much
bolder since her arrival at the Weyr, but she still blushed slightly
at her own forthrightness. "I've got some fresh meats still. Would you
like them?" She held a plate that had been balanced on her tray.
He looked up and smiled with the same friendly smile his father had so
often used. "I would love a nice hot meat pie. They were all gone when
I went through!" he said. "I'd wondered who was doing all the
wonderful baking lately." He'd made it a habit to get to the hall a
little early to get his pick of the baked goods.
"You're in luck. I think I have the last one right here," Cardella
grinned. "I've seen you at some of the candidate classes, haven't I?"
She asked. He looked like someone else she knew too, but who was it?
Cardella tilted her head a bit to see him in a different light. She
_knew_ he reminded her of someone, she just knew it.
She had a nice smile he thought as she grinned at him. Not the
speculating and seeming predatory looks of many of the weyr raised
girls. "Yes," he said "I'm also a candidate." He thought he remembered
seeing her talking to Galwen. He took a bite of the meat pie she
offered and his eyes popped open. "This is really good!" he said. "Did
you make them?"
Cardella grinned proudly. "I did make them, actually. I'm glad you
enjoyed it. I love baking. In fact I spent some time at the Bakercraft
Hall before I came here." She wasn't sure whey she was blabbering on
about herself, but he made her feel at ease. "I'm Cardella by the way.
You must look familiar to me because I've seen you at classes. Do you
mind if I sit a bit? I've been on my feet for the past few
candlemarks." She indicated the chair across from him.
"Sure" he said kicking the chair out across from him. "You deserve a
break." then he thought a moment. "You know my da said there was a
baker making wonderful pies.. must have been you!"
She sank into the seat with a sigh. It was good to be off her feet.
Today had turned into one very long day when she'd been asked to stay
and help in the kitchens when some of the others had not been able to
work today.
"Your da? He's here? Whose your da?" Cardella asked, still not putting
two and two together. Had she met him? She wrecked her brain. She'd
met so many people since her arrival that it was hard to place
everyone sometimes.
He smiled as she sat down with a sigh. Here was someone else who
worked hard in the Weyr. "My da is the brown rider D'ale. Don't know
if he's talked to you or not."
Cardella sat forward and smiled, "I met him when he first returned to
the Weyr. He was so nice." She cocked her head and looked at him, her
grin widening, "I _knew_ you reminded me of someone and now I know
who!" She chuckled a bit.
"Your da had mentioned that he had come back to watch you stand. Is
this your first time on the sands as well?" She asked him. There was
so much she didn't know about what would really happen once the
Hatching started, it was comforting to know she would not be the only
one standing for the first time.
"Oh, I've watched plenty of times but this will be my first time to
Stand. It's kind of exciting to think about." he half smiled. "My da
said that? He transferred back to watch me Stand?" he was a bit
puzzled since his father had never said that to him.
Cardella was surprised by his questions. Surely D'ale had told his son
what he'd told her, yet the questions made her wonder. "That's what he
told me when we first met." She replied simply. "I wish I was lucky
enough to have my da here with me. I'm not even sure he'll be able to
make it to watch me Stand. Our little Hold is not close to the Weyr at
all. I haven't seen my family much in the last few years. After I went
to study at the Bakercraft Hall, I saw my da from time to time, but
not the rest of my family. You're very lucky to have your family so
close to you here." Cardella was looking directly at Kendale. She
realized she'd gone on a bit, but it had just seemed to fit the
situation.
"Oh!" he said, "You should ask my da to go get yours! He's good about
things like that and besides I bet you could bribe him with your
pies." he laughed.
"What a wonderful idea!" Cardella all but gushed her excitement. "I'm
not sure he'll be able to come, but we could at least try. Maybe even
just for a visit. I do miss him so. Thank you so much for that idea!"
Cardella, in her excitement had gotten up and come around the table to
give the young man a hug. "Maybe I'll go talk to him right now." She
grinned. already imagining how nice it would be to see some of her
family once again.
Kendale blinked hugging her back then watched her run off with a
lopsided grin. He kind of liked that hug.
