Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 11, day 22 of Turn 5
To Corowal, sparring with guards (well, mostly with his friend Zandan)
was just a form of physical exercise. Today, Zandan wasn't available, so
he had ended up practicing with wily old guard sergeant.
"Ouch, I have to remember that, it's was a new one," Corowal said and
rubbed his tight where he had just received a painful kick. He was going
to have a bruise. He signaled for a break and limped to his water skin.
The guard grinned widely, you didn't get to trounce up the Lord Holder
everyday!
"How Corofel's and Ofewal's training has been going?" Corowal asked after a
taking a drink.
"Corofel's, quite well, he enjoys it, but Ofewal," he shook his head
ruefully.
"Well, Ofewal has always been physically weak," Corowal remarked.
"Perhaps you should start to train Corolia too when she grows up a bit."
"A Girl? Girls don't fight. They can't learn to use weapons!" The guard was
incredulous and dismissed the idea straight away.
Corowal was quite put off with such attitude. "Really?" he said with
challenging tone. "They can't?" He happened to spot Erilite and gestured
her to come over. He knew she had lived as a holdless, and probably had
learned thing or two that the guard found unsuitable for a girl.
Erilite noticed her father's gesture and walked over. She gave him a
smile and nodded. She was just coming back to the hold after being out.
She needed to get away from all the people once in a while. She wore
Slacks and a shirt belted at the waist. Her hair was tied back. And her
Crystal blue eyes took everything in.
"Hello Erilite," Corowal started with a greeting and plunged right into
the business. "I know you have had rather...exceptional life. Did you
ever happen to learn how to defend yourself? Did you ever end up in
situation where you have to fight for your life?"
Erilite smiled. She nodded and then looked over at Sergeant. She then
bent down to her boot and came up with a boot knife. It was nothing
special. Well worn in spots but, defiantly kept sharp and ready to use.
She held it out for her father to see.
"A handsome one. I presume you know how to use it?" Corowal remarked and
asked, giving the sergeant a raised eyebrow.
"Well, I never..." the old guard just mumbled.
She nodded. Glancing at the guard she narrowed her eyes. He was one that
thought women had no place but the kitchen. She pulled out her chalk
and wrote in even strokes.
there a problem sir?> She smiled sweetly all the while watching his
stance. He was rather agitated form the look of it.
"That's my girl all right," Corowal chuckled softly.
"How do I know you're not just making it up?" the old guard asked.
This upset Erilite. She did not like being accused of lying. She turned
on him and changed her grip on the blade. She crouched into a hunting
stance and watched him. The look in her eyes told him he had better be
on guard. with a slight tilt to her head she showed him with her eyes
that she was challenging him.
"All right, girl, if that's what you want," the guard growled, and pulling
out his own blade, he crouched too.
"Watch out for his left kick," Corowal warned his daughter and moved out to
make room for the pair.
The guard lunged.
Erillite watched him and quickly parried as she stepped to the side. She
quickly gauged his reach, his momentum and his strength. He was
thinking more with his mind then with instinct. She was quick and had
her youth going for her. But she was not about to believe herself
superior. She knew better than that. She she dodged his attack she
brought her own blade around trying to nick his shoulder.
The guard twisted away and sent his left leg flying sideways, trying to kick
her feet from under her.
Erilite jumped and came up turning lightly. This was fun. She hadn't
gotten a work out like this in quite some time. She brought her blade up
behind him and towards his ribs.
He managed to twist away but not before the tip of the knife caught the
fabric of his shirt and tore a large slit to it. "Aw, now you tore me
shirt", he complained, but something like respect had crept to his
voice.
"I buy you a new one," Corowal promised the guard. She was doing
almost as well as he had. If he ever had any doubts left about his
paternity, they now dissipated. She was certainly his daughter, all
right!
Erilite watched to see if he was done. She couldn't help but let a smile
sneak onto her face. She could see pride in her Father's face and it
made her feel good. He seemed to approve.
