Description: Hatching day K'ale meets his lifemate for the first time
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 8 of Turn 5
He'd awoken that morning with almost a breathless feeling like when he
was a child and he'd known turnover was starting that day, with all
its special feeling and his family around along with gifts and great
food.
Today was special somehow. He just knew it.
The candidate barracks were stirring as every one woke to begin their
day like any other. He lay in his bed a moment longer before finally
throwing off the covers and shivering in the cold air that hit him.
He shook off the temptation to burrow back into the warm covers.
Instead he slipped on his clothes and added a sweater before making
his way to the dining hall for breakfast.
A hot mug of klah and one of Cardella's pastries later he was feeling
warm again. He went back for some eggs and bacon and was just digging
in when he heard the first bit of humming.
He cleared his dishes and began running from the hall and back to the
barracks where all the other candidates who were going to Stand today
were also scrambling.
His heart was thumping in his chest and this time he didn't even feel
the cold as he changed into his impression garb. Once he was dressed,
he bent over at the waist, grabbing his knees and calmed his breathing
like his da had shown him. Then blowing out a final breath he formed
up with the other candidates to march into the sands following their
master.
His mind was awhirl and he had a rough time nailing his thoughts down
in one spot until they got into the hatching grounds and he saw the
Weyrleader and Weyrwoman sitting there watching with smiles on their
faces, pointing and talking for all the world like this was a normal
day and not the most important one of his entire life. The great queen
seemed anxious and hissed at her rider but then settled. Several
candidates were frightened by the display. He looked up and bowed to
her while he moved closer to her eggs.
As they walked his eyes shifted back to the stands to search them and
there were both his parents grinning at him like fools. He grinned
back with what he was sure was a similar foolishness and waved knowing
they were both here for _him_. This was his time to Stand.
Spreading out in a semicircle around the eggs he Stood and watched as
several eggs moved. His eyes seemed to be drawn to one particular egg
that was almost violently shaking and rocking like the little one
inside was frantic to be released. A _crack_ like a beast herders whip
split the air and brown hatchling spilled out onto the sands. Kendale
felt himself lean forward to help the little guy and then guiltily
stepped back again. He had never felt this kind of draw when he was
sitting in the stands watching and he looked around him in confusion.
The awkward little dragonet stumbled as he wove his way through the
other eggs crying out. Once again Kendale's instinct was to move
forward and this time he couldn't resist. Then in that moment
something wonderful happened. His breath caught in his throat and a
smile spread across his face.
}:Where have you been? I've been looking for you:{ said the little
dragon his eyes whirling. **I'm sorry** he started but the little one
lunged into his arms and there was nothing more to say. Love,
unconditional; acceptance, forever and more than he could describe to
anyone flowed between the two.
"Imalkyth is his name" he cried out in his joy. The crowd was already
cheering so the words were lost but His shining eyes found his parents
in the stands for just a moment before the brown's hunger dominated
them both and he began to help the baby dragon across the sands
towards his waiting first meal.
**Food is this way** he said remembering where they needed to go from
his lessons. Of course there were people to help them off the sands
but he watched to make sure the little brown wings were tucked up on
Imalkyth's back so he wouldn't foul them and injure himself. ]:Food?:{
he said almost wistfully and then the little brown became very
demanding as they neared the pails and Kendale… "no K'ale" he said to
himself with a grin and began to feed the bloodied gobs into the
bottomless maw.
His life was changed forever and he couldn't imagine it any other way.
