D'ale

D'ale

She sat on the cold bench, watching as the others arrived. Kenza had
been anxious the moment Solith had told her the eggs were hatching.
She did not want to miss a moment of what she hoped would be a special
day. The Stands were quickly filling and there was still no sign of
D'ale. She knew he would be there. He wouldn't miss this for the
world. Her hands clenched in her lap was the only truly visible sign
that she was nervous for her eldest son. **Please let him Impress. Let
him feel the joy of joining with a dragon.** She glanced to where the
dragons perched, humming their welcome to the new dragonets. Today
would decide each little dragon's fate, and each candidate's fate as
well.

For Kendale, this was be it. If he didn't Impress this time, it was
likely he would age out and never have a dragon of his own. She
glanced up as the eggs rocked and drew her attention once more.

He'd headed for the hatching grounds but been waylaid and asked to go
and fetch a Master Crafter who had been caught outside the Weyr at
this crucial time. So, off he went to fetch the stray Master and
deliver him to the hatching. Of course that made him late in getting
back to the hatching grounds.

He trotted up into the stands and arrived at Kenza's side out of
breath. "Looks like I'm just in time" he pointed with his chin to
where the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman had just entered. He scooted in
close as the benches packed and people started moving closer. He
smiled and kissed her brushing her hair behind her shoulder before he
grabbed her hand and holding it on his knee. "I like it when you wear
it down." he leaned in and whispered and then wisely faced forward.

She returned his smile and kiss of greeting, though most all of her
attentions were focused in on the sands. When he spoke of her hair,
she reached her free hand up and touched it, then gave a bit of a
snort of surprise. "I was in such a hurry, I didn't even think about
putting it up." She turned and looked at D'ale shaking her head
slightly, even though a hint of a smile was visible just for him.
Leaning in she whispered, "You like anything you can thread your
fingers through."

Just as she finished speaking, the candidates made their way onto the
sands. Her fingers, entwined wish his, gave him a nervous squeeze.
"There he is!" She beamed a smile at her son, sending good thoughts
his way in hopes that it would somehow help him to Impress. She had
been proud of him when he'd decided he wanted to be a Smith, and she
was still proud of him for choosing to Stand. She only hoped he would
not leave disappointed with his decision.

"Do you think we looked that scared?" he chuckled as he watched the
candidates place themselves into a semi circle near the eggs. He was a
bit startled when the gold hissed at her rider but Hygalia's laugh set
him at ease that was until Torerath told him she was testy when she
clutched. He didn't say anything but held Kenza's hand a bit tighter.
The eggs were rocking and he almost held his breath.

"Probably," she chuckled. She watched the goings on with the queen,
knowing that many times queens were very testy about their brood, just
as Kenza would be about anyone trying to harm her own children. Not
that they needed her protection anymore, seeing how tall and strong
Kendale looked standing out there amidst the other candidates.

He'd been to plenty of hatchings but this one was the first to mean
this much to him. This was his first child to Stand. He knew he
probably looked as goofy over it as if he were wet behind the ears
Candidate himself. His eyes focused on Kendale where he stood remember
his own first sight of Torerath. Then with a crack that reverberated
through the stands one of the rocking eggs split and spilled a brown
hatchling onto the sands. He gripped Kenza's hand as the little
dragonet called piteously for his and threaded his way through the
other eggs calling the whole way. It looked like... "Yes" he yelled as
Kendale stepped forward and the little brown fell into his arms.

The crowd erupted and he grabbed Kenza "Brown he got brown" he grinned
and picked her up and kissed her before setting her back on her feet.

}:Imalkyth knew who he wanted:{ D'ale grinned and waved when K'ale,
for that was his name now, looked back at them.

She watched, anxious and wide-eyed, as the hum in the room increased.
**Please let him Impress,** she thought, knowing how very much he
wanted this. The sound of the first egg cracking drew her attention.
She watched the little brown stumble and stagger around the sands
until...until....she returned the squeeze D'ale had given her hand
with one of her own. "Yes!" She beamed as she looked down proudly at
her son. "That's my son. He got brown!" Kenza turned and threw her
arms around D'ale.

}:They will be a good match,:{ Solith told her rider. **Yes, yes, they
will!** Kenza beamed back, the pride evident on her face.

He smiled and cheered with the rest of the crowd as the other eggs
hatched and more pairings occurred. He was sorry they were going to
lose those pies from the baker girl but he was happy for her, and he
couldn't help but see how happy the pair were next to him when the
blueriders son impressed a rather large green. "Hey, isn't that
Ken... K'ale's friend?" he asked Kenza.

"Yes, I believe so," Kenza replied. "K'ale. I like the sound of that,"
she beamed towards D'ale. "I want to see him! I cannot wait to
congratulate him and meet his new lifemate." She was so eager, she
could hardly sit still as the rest of the eggs hatched and more
bondings were made. K'ale. It suited him.

Finally, it was done and the crowds began to disperse. D'ale grabbed
Kenza's hand to lead her from the stands toward where the newly
Impressed pairs were congregating.
