K'ale

K'ale

He was tired after washing two dragons and when the blue's rider told
him that the Cyan Wingthird wanted to see him in her office he
couldn't help but try and rub it in Kendales face. The young
bluerider taunted him with thoughts of how the Wingthird thought he
wasn't cut out for Standing and would chew him out for laziness. He
was a bit puzzled though when Kendale didn't react. He didn't have
the heart to take away all the guys fun after all. How would the
stupid fool know that the Cyan Wingthird was his mother.

Kendal trudged away to the laughter and comments of the guy and his
buddy but straightened and ran up the steps toward the corridor he
needed. Soon he was at her door and knocking for admittance.

"Come!" She called out, looking up from the information she'd been
reading. When the door opened, Kenza smiled and rose from her chair.

"Kendale," she said, moving around the desk. She would have hugged
him, but she knew that being a grown man he wasn't as keen on such hugs
as he once was. "How have you been, my son?" She asked, gesturing for
him to come in and join her on the small sofa she had in her office.

"I'm fine mother." he said in response he'd felt himself stiffen up
when he walked through the door. It even puzzled him why he felt that
way she'd never been mean or uncaring but they'd never been especially
close. So it was with a guarded expression that he move to join her on
the sofa.

"I'm sorry if I took you from something important," Kenza said,
looking him in the eye. She wanted to be close to her son now that he
was older and going to Stand. It wasn't that they _weren't_ close, but
truth be told, she'd never been much of the mothering type. "I wanted
to see how your studies went. You know I support you in anything you
choose, smithcraft or dragonriding." She swallowed a bit and smiled at
him, "I've always been proud that you were my son."

"Nothing more than another dragon to wash." The older weyrbrats were
better able to handle the larger ones and today he'd been helping a
bronze rider until her summons. He gave her a rather sheepish smile.
His mother was formidable and he only hoped someday to emulate her and
his father who had been a wingsecond before he left for Riverbluff
Weyr.

"My studies are going well. At least I'm helping a bit with some of
the younger Candidates." he said with no little pride. Of course it
crossed his mind that she hadn't heard about the incident with the
bully in the dining hall. He wasn't really proud of that one event
though the incidence of bullying seemed to have dropped off a bit.
"Thank you mother," he said with a smile. "I wish to Stand."

She smiled, pleased at his words. "I know you will do well, no matter
the outcome. Though Solith always seems to think you would make a good
rider." Kenza shook her head happily, knowing how much her green
actually liked her son. That alone made her all the more proud. "Now,"
she cleared her throat, "I've heard tell of a little something that
happened in the dining hall. Would you care to explain?"

His heart stopped and he felt like dropping through the floor. He
closed his eyes a moment knowing the guilt was written all over him.
"He and a bunch of holder boys were teasing some of the smaller
candidates, I was just protecting them." he said, knowing it was no
excuse.

Her eyes seemed to almost glow with an intensity that had not been
there moments before. At least he hadn't tried to hide it from her.
_That_ would have only made things worse.

"You _know_ that fighting is not permitted in the Weyr," her tone was
firm. "No matter the cause, good or bad. We cannot permit rider to
fight rider, and as a candidate you have accepted the rules that all
riders must follow. For shards sake, Kendale, you could _lose_ the
chance to Stand over this!" She heaved an upset sigh. "You're lucky
your father and I defended you, but don't expect us to do it again. If
anything, and I mean _anything_ happens like this again, you will be
_out_. Period."

She swallowed and her eyes softened. "I _don't_ want to see that happen!"

He started to protest to tell her she'd heard wrong but instead
subsided. If anyone had been on the receiving end of one of her
lectures in the past they would know that arguing even a little bit
would set you up for an additional hour of lecture. He nodded
instead. "Yes ma, I'm sorry." he said softly.

She gave him a firm glare for a moment then spoke, "Just _don't_ do it
again, or I will see to it _myself_ that you do not Stand." She took
in a deep breath. "Now that _that's_ over with. I want you to know
that I stand behind you. I hope you will succeed."

He heard the steel behind her statement and had absolutely no doubt
he'd gone too far this time. He met her eyes squarely. "Yes Ma'am" he
said full of respect. He still felt justified in what he'd done, the
kid deserved it but she was correct about the rules. He'd stepped
outside the bounds and was lucky it was Kenza reaming him and not the
Weyrlingmaster who might not have been so lenient for such an
infraction, even if it was only the first time.
