K'ale

He walked toward the lake and chuckled as the little brown dragonet
leaped and bucked extending his wings tentatively. He shook his head
at Imalkyth's attempts a coordinating all six of his limbs at the same
time. "Hey" he called when the little guy threw himself into the water
and began to paddle around.

He had his bucket, bag of sand, and jar of oil with him and walked to
the edge of the lake. "Don't stay in there too long. You'll get tired
and want to sleep then I won't be able to take care of that itch."

:}Will there be more food later?{:

"Of course!" he answered and sent a wave of love toward the small
brown form under the water and his one track mind. "I'll always take
care of you." he promised with all his heart.

Finally his lifemate tired of paddling around, surfaced near the shore
trotting out to shake himself off and shower his rider. "Enough
already." laughed K'ale. K'ale reached for the sweetsand and some
water to make the foaming cleanser that would wash away all the
evidence of Imalkyth's last meal and the stressed hide of his
increasing growth.

After washing so many dragons during his time as a candidate the chore
didn't seem so much like a chore anymore. He scrubbed thoroughly
communicating with the brown to make sure he got every spot as he
worked. It was so much easier when he didn't have to guess.

Tuneless whistling occupied him and he didn't even realize it was one
of his fathers tunes that he'd frequently heard playing when he was
growing up. Suddenly he heard the identical song more expertly
whistled and looked up to see Torerath coming out of the water and his
father nearby.

D'ale crossed the gravel and threw his arm around his son's shoulders
briefly for a sideways hug. "He's beautiful" of course D'ale was
partial to brown.

:}He's small{: said Torerath

**You were too once**

:}Not _that_ small{: the big brown practically sniffed and D'ale
chuckled **And how would you remember? All dragons are small at the
beginning.**

Torerath lost interest and dove back into the water so D'ale picked up
a brush from his own pail and started helping his son whistling the
same tune K'ale had moments earlier.

K'ale smiled at his father. D'ale hadn't said anything to him about
the fight before the Impression but he knew, Kenza had told him as
much. He realized he'd let both his parents down and while he still
felt justified, what D'ale had predicted for those bullies had turned
out to be true. Nadden, no N'den had Impressed green.

"How's Dalora?" he asked. He'd only met the little girl once and it
seemed his da was smitten with her.

"She's fine with her new foster mother," said D'ale though a shadow
crossed his face.

K'ale didn't want to pry. His da had quite the reputation with the
green riders around the Weyr and seemed to leave them wanting more of
his company, yet he'd never been werymated other than his ma many
turns ago and this Lesora person. It was funny to thing he had a
sister young enough to be his own child.

D'ale realized he hadn't invited many confidences since his return.
But of course it was different leaving a teenager and returning to a
man. "So how are you doing?" he asked "Besides, sleep deprived?" he
added remembering his own first few months with Torerath.

K'ale grinned "We're doing ok," he said "Imalkyth is very even
tempered and calm most of the time. Not like some of the greens." he
laughed at the thought of G'wen's Neath who acted for all the world
like her hide was gold. "Though he seems to be a bit of a trickster so
I have to watch my back."

D'ale laughed, "How many times has he dumped you into the lake?" he
asked rhetorically.and turned to start on Torerath who'd finally
emerged from the water. The smile on his son's face spoke volumes.

The little brown was starting to sink toward sleep and sluggish in
answering where he itched. **Why don't you go over there a lay down
while I help my da with Torerath** but he could feel the yearning
toward their little space in the barracks and knew he wanted to grab a
chance at some sleep before their next class or meal. He knew of the
dragonet fell asleep here he wouldn't be budged until he awoke
ravenous.

D'ale said over his shoulder. "You two should go back, you're looking
all beat and Imalkyth is about out on his feet."

"Thanks da." he said. "I was going to help you..."

"I know." he answered. "Another time. Maybe I'll see you at dinner."

The weyrling pair shuffled out and D'ale turned to watch them go. So
many memories were tied up with this very lake and another small brown
dragon tossing _him_ into the lake.

Suddenly he found himself scooped through the air landing with a
splash in the water while dragon laughter filled his head.

:}We can still play that game{:

"Faranth!" he yelled "You great brute!" he sputtered and stumped out
of the water laughing all the way.
