Getting to Know You

Writers: Chelle, Emma
Date Posted: 3rd February 2011

Characters: P'nal, Demalia
Description: The Wingsecond asks Demalia how she's doing.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 10 of Turn 5

After drills, P'nal ran to catch up with Demalia. Since he had been
promoted, he had tried to make time with each of his wingriders. It
was important to get to know everyone and their strengths and
weaknesses. "Demalia, do you have a moment?"

"Certainly, Sir," she replied.

"Ah good. I just wanted to touch base with you to see how things
were going." He let that hang in the air, walking with her now at a
casual pace.

"Everything's fine," she replied. "I think we're doing well."

"Good. Is there anything you'd like to work on or anything?" He kept
the conversation casual.

"Not really," she said, wondering where the conversation was going. Had
someone said something to the Wingsecond?

"I'm just trying to get a feel for where everyone is at. What would you say
are your strengths?" The brownrider smiled, encouraging her.

"We don't give up easily. If we start something, we finish it."

"That's a great quality. And maybe something that needs improvement,
if you had to choose one?" This was where P'nal could try to help her.

"Timing perhaps?" she suggested.

"What part of it, exactly?" P'nal asked, waiting for her to clarify.

"The changeover, when to drop out if I'm in the first half and when to come
in if I'm flying the second half of fall."

"Generally, it will depend on the fall. However, you should receive orders
beforehand as to when that's going to happen. If it's going to be a shorter
fall due to weather, we'll time it shorter. Or if it's longer, then I may go for an extra candlemark."

"It's just getting in place so that there is as little disruption as
possible."

"I understand... Do you think doing a few more formation drills might help
you with that?" He had a few ideas about changing drills up.

She thought for a moment. "It might," she said after a few seconds.

"Allright, I tell you what...we already have trios for extra drilling. I'll
try to setup some formation drills for yours, practicing betweening in formation and switching out. If that doesn't help, let me know and we'll work on it." P'nal would have to check the scheduling board, but he thought it would be workable.

"Thank you."

"We'll be doing inspections next sevenday. Make sure everyone's straps
and gear are taken care of." The weather wasn't too bad. P'nal thought
about a walk.

"We'll be ready."

"I'll let you on your way, but if you need anything Demalia, my door is
open." He gave her a small nod and smile before he headed off in the direction of the bathing pools.
