J'nev looked down at the sweepride schedule. Another sweepride
scheduled over mountains. Spring might have finally reached
Dragonsfall, but up along those inland mountains, the snow was still
kicking up a bitterly cold wind. Just the thought chilled him to the
bone! They had to keep an eye on those mountain passes, he knew, to be
sure no one was stranded or caught in an avalanche of half-thawed snow.
But it was rather suspicious that _he_ had been assigned that run the
last three sevendays. In fact, ever since he had caught Aileyan, it
seemed he had been given all the assignments no one else wanted. It was
obvious U'kaiah was punishing him for something. At least in his own
mind. It wasn't fair, and he was getting sick of it!
But who could he talk to? He could go to G'nir, but U'kaiah was still
so sharding popular. If he went above his head, it would seem he was
just a complainer. No, he would have to go to someone lower than
U'kaiah, but someone who seemed to be able to tell U'kaiah her mind...
"Excuse me, Wingthird, but may I trouble you for a minute?" J'nev asked
when he peeked his head into her office.
Kenza looked up from the charts she was examining. Threadfall was always
in the back of her mind, as was the best way to help lead the wing to
destroy their enemy.
"Ah, yes, J'nev, what can I do for you?" She asked, indicating the chair
in her office if he felt inclined to sit.
He took the seat and suddenly felt rather uncomfortable looking over at
the stern face of the Wingthird. Kenza has a reputation for being hard,
but fair. She took no mercy, though, on those who seemed to just want
to shirk their duties. Faranth, he hoped he had chosen the right person
to talk to! "It's a little awkward, but I feel I need to stand up for
myself. You see, I won a Flight a while back, and I couldn't help but
notice that since that day, I've been getting the very worst of the
assignments. I don't mind doing my part, but I can't help but feel like
I'm being punished for something. The only thing I can figure is the
Wingleader U'kaiah is punishing me for catching his favorite in a
Flight."
Kenza listened to his words, snorting at his final comment. "U'kaiah is
one of the best wingleaders we have, but he can have strong opinions
about things." She cleared her throat trying to hide her amusement. She
knew he had won Aileyan's flight, but she hadn't realized U'kaiah was
punishing the bronzerider for it, though truth be told, she wasn't
surprised.
"_Do_ you deserve the sweeprides you have been given? Has anything else
been going on? Because I can tell you right now," Kenza leaned forward
resting her elbows on the desk, "if I go to speak to U'kaiah on your
behalf and there is _anything_, _anything_ else going on besides winning
a flight, then I swear the sweeprides you are on now will seem like a treat
compared to the duties I'll assign to you." Kenza waited, never once
taking her eyes off the young bronzerider.
J'nev squirmed a little under the intensity of her gaze. Would she hear
about what happened between him and Aileyan in the Flight room? As a
greenrider, she might side with her. But that wasn't U'kaiah's
business! "I haven't done anything wrong, Kenza. I swear. I won her
Flight fair. What happened between her and I is between us. He has no
right to punish me."
She held up her hand to still him. "I don't want to hear about what went
on between you and Aileyan, just as I don't want to hear whom U'kaiah is
messing with under the sheets. I don't give a damn whose legs you or
anyone else spreads, but if there has been anything other than this
flight at issue then I _will_ have issue with you. If U'kaiah is, in fact,
punishing you for winning the flight, I _will_ speak to him. It might not change
matters. He is still the Wingleader, but I will plead your case, but you better
not screw this up J'nev or I will never step in for you again. Do you
understand me?"
"I swear, Kenza, that's it," he said, and truly meant it. Outside that
Flight there was nothing U'kaiah could fault him for. Unless he found
out about those herdbeasts he had poached... But the timing wasn't
right. He hadn't gotten a one all winter. Why would he be punished
_now_?
She nodded, convinced he was telling the truth. "I'll talk to him then.
No promises, of course, but I'll do what I can. Is there anything else?"
"No ma'am," he assured her. "I just want what's fair is all."
