"So, have you met your half sister yet?" G'wen shot a look over his
shoulder to the much taller figure of K'ale, as the boys walked
quickly to the lower caverns to see G'wen's foster mother. Both his
green and K'ale's brown were fast asleep, so the boys had just a
short period before they would be wanted back in the barracks.
He smiled. "Yeah," he said "She's a cute little thing even if she is a
bit shy of people." he thought about his Da's trip down with her and
her excitement at seeing Imalkyth. "She didn't even look at me of
course. Her eyes were only for Imalkyth." he chuckled. "It was a
mutual admiration, Ima wanted to carry her around on his neck." he
shook his head at the memory.
"Ah, so Imalkyth can say he's the first of our clutchmates to have
been ridden. Wait 'til Neath hears that!" The smaller boy chuckled
at the thought of his haunty green finding out one of her clutchmates
did something before she did.
K'ale laughed, "I didn't think of that!" he said "I'm sure she'll have
something to say about it though." he told G'wen. Neath was quite the
young lady in her own mind, queen of all she surveyed. Imalkyth
tolerated her behavior with amusement though when they were doing
their ground drills he was quick enough to correct her if she was out
of place in their three or six.
"When doesn't she?" G'wen sighed, thinking back to Neath's latest
antics, this time with a full grown bronze. Luckily both the rider
and dragon had been understanding.
"Don't worry," said K'ale "She'll have more stamina than most greens
since she's so big for her color." He knew G'wen had a hard time with
her at times but he had heard stories of his mother's green. "Hey,
maybe my mother has some ideas for you."
"Yeah, is her green like Neath then?" He didn't know her Solith much,
other than knowing she was on the small side but very fast.
He laughed. "I've heard she was a handful... like my mother."
"Ah." G'wen made a mental note to go and seek her out. It'd be good
to talk to someone about Neath's bossiness without feeling like he was
unhappy with her or anything.
Halgalla's room was just around the corner. When they reached the
door, G'wen briefly knocked before opening it.
K'ale laughed as he walked in behind G'wen. I didn't matter what time
they showed up, she always had some sort of snack waiting. He heard a
squeal from the other side of the room and his sister came running to
hug his leg.
The smaller boy stepped out of the way when he saw the girl-sized
hurricane come their direction. Laughing with the two siblings, he looked over his shoulder to his foster mother. "Hello!"
"Hello indeed! Are you not eating these days? Look at the site of
you!" His plump foster mother came up to envelope him in a
backbreaking hug. "Don't you get away from that green of yours long
enough to eat? And you!" She looked at K'ale. "Don't you eat
either? I'm going to have words with that E'naer, so I am!"
K'ale laughed and picked Dalora up. "Hi there sweetheart," he said
giving her a big kiss. She was a happy little thing now that she'd had
some time to acclimate. He turned and laughed at Halgalla. "Why do you
think we come here so much," he quipped before whirling his sister
around the room to her squeals of delight.
"At least one of you has sense." She nodded her approval to K'ale.
Handsome boy, nothing like her wispy little Galwen--no, G'wen--she
corrected herself. Not that he wasn't good looking as well. He'd
catch the eye of many a blue rider, in time. She just hoped he had
more sense when his father, who's brain resided in his trousers,
before he settled down with that T'bel boy.
"Your treats are almost as good as Cardella's" said K'ale breathlessly
as he finished the spin.
"Thank you," she said, stuffing a fair more into a bag for the boys to
take back to the barracks with them. Indicating the table, she
continued, "come sit, boys, I've saved some dinner for the two of
you."
K'ale was still bouncing his sister and grinning from ear to ear as
the mention of food drew him toward the table. But the moment he got
to the table she squirmed to get down. "Looks like she doesn't want to
be trapped at the table again." He sat down and dug in without any
more ceremony than a mumbled "Thank you Halgalla" between bites. His
own foster mother wasn't the cook G'wen's was. Though he'd never
doubted her love. He knew his sister would be happy here.
G'wen sat beside him, rolling his eyes a bit at K'ale's table manners.
He ate his dinner with considerbly more grace than his friend. He
sighed when he got to the sweet. It looked like yet another one of
Lien's sorry excuses for a pastry. "This almost makes me wish
Cardella hadn't Impressed! Here's hoping she can get back to some
baking when we're all out of Weyrlinghood."
"I'm with you there," said K'ale. He couldn't wait until their friend
got enough free time to bake again. Truth be told he wouldn't mind a
little time with the glass blowers either. Imalkyth was a presence in
the back of his mind like breathing now though and he didn't want to
jeopardize anything for his lifemate.
Before he knew it the food was gone. "Thank you Halgalla." He said.
"No problem, son," she said, ruffling his hair. "Come back more
often, you two. Fanath knows you both need to be fattened up a bit."
Whilst Weyringhood may be hard, that was no excuse to be thin, in her
mind. Both boys were going to need more reserves for when the
training got harder than it was now.
A sleepy twinge in his mind alerted G'wen. "Uh-oh, I think Neath's waking up."
K'ale could also feel the stirrings and sleepy question. "Oh yeah" he
said with a smile. "We gotta get going." He went to scoop up his
sister again and give her a quick kiss.
