Part 1 of 2
It was Turns' End and Sarban had gotten himself dressed, shaven, and
he even had a hat on. Looking at himself in the looking glass, he hoped it would work. Leaving his
quarters, he went to pick Lisadi up. He nodded at some of the holders that were headed to the feast. Then,
he arrived at her door.
Lisadi smoothed her hands down over the blue dress. The color was
stunning and the material was some of the best she'd ever worn in her whole life. It still amazed her
that she'd even been able to afford something so magnificent. True, she'd agreed to run seams for months
to help make up the difference.
"Pretty," Dareera said as she watched Lisadi, who turned to look back
at the child. "She's right you know. You look lovely," Hamal told her. Hamal had agreed to spend the night
with the children so Lisadi could truly enjoy herself without worry.
The sound of someone at the door had Lisadi nervously running her
hands through her hair. "It's time to go," she said with a smile lightening her face. Stepping towards the
door, she pulled it open and instantly her smile grew even wider at the sight of Sarban standing before her.
"Hello," she greeted him. "I like your hat."
"Oh? Thanks.." He looked sheepish for a moment, then he looked at her.
"You look very nice. I hope you have on your dancing slippers, though." A smile came across his lips then.
"Thank you Sarban," Lisadi reached up and just briefly touched his arm
as she spoke. "Do you want to come in for a few minutes or shall we go? My dancing slippers are
ready," she grinned at him, feeling the butterflies whirling in her stomach.
"If we don't go, we'll be late." Corowal was going to do an opening
ceremony and Sarban had to be there.
"Then off we go," Lisadi replied, turning to wave to the children and
Hamal before stepping through the door and shutting it behind her. Now that they were alone, she leaned in
towards him and gave him a fairly chaste kiss on the cheek. "I've been looking forward to this for the past
sevenday." She easily slid her arm into his, no longer feeling out of place doing so.
"Are you hungry?" They would have a feast, but he didn't plan on
eating before the ceremony. If she was hungry,
though.. Sarban led them through the corridors.
"A bit," Lisadi replied, "but if we need to hurry, I can wait. I don't
want you to be late."
Once they reached the Great Hall, Sarban found her a seat and made
sure she had something to eat. "I'll be back as soon as he's done." He went up to the dais, taking his place. Once it was over, he returned to Lisadi. Sarban got his own food served and began to eat. "This is good."
She'd thanked him and watched as he stood proudly beside the Lord
Holder. Lisadi found that she enjoyed watching Sarban, no matter how near or far he was from her. She'd
eaten through quite a bit of her food by the time he returned. "Yes, I've been enjoying things quite a bit, but now I can enjoy them even more since you've returned to join me." She smiled brightly in his direction.
"So, have you ever went to a proper Turns' End celebration?" he asked
as he began to cut and spice his own food.
"Nothing like this," Lisadi said as her arm swept around the room. "At
our hold, we had a small celebration, but this is immense compared to that."
"Just wait till you see a proper gather." He was planning a huge one
for three months' time, in fact, but he couldn't tell her that.
"Oh," she smiled brightly at him, "Tell me what a proper gather will
be like?" Lisadi had never realized just how exciting life in a larger hold could be. Not only were there so many people, and special events, but now there was this fluttering she felt in her heart when she looked at Sarban. She still found herself working through the memories of Burned, but she knew he would not want her to be alone the rest of her life. She missed him, yes, but she had to move forward and Sarban _was_ one way she was moving forward.
"Well there is entertainment from the harpers. There is food and wine.
Craft stalls, hold stalls, and things for trade. The dragonriders and other people come. We have dancing.
It's a big event." Sometimes, it was the only time people in the outlying holds saw each other.
"That sounds amazing," she replied, though she found she couldn't stop
staring at him. "At least it would be as long as I knew I'd get to spend time with you if we went to such a
gather." She smiled at him. "I'm already enjoying my night here more so because I'm with you."
"Well thank you. It's nice to have someone to talk to at these things
for a change." He finished his food and leaned back
in his chair. The music would start soon. "So, how good of a dancer
are you then?"
"I used to be a fairly good dancer, but truthfully, it's been awhile.
Burned, my late husband, wasn't much for dancing, though I always loved the times he would dance with me. Do you dance then, Sarban?" Lisadi could feel the music almost running through her veins and desired to move with the music.
"Not well, but I'm decent. I do it more for the enjoyment." He didn't
make a fool out of himself at least.
Had that been an invitation to dance or just friendly conversation?
Lisadi wasn''t completely sure, but she decided to go with the first
option and hope Sarban didn't find her too forward. "Would you like to
dance with me now?"
He smiled, "I thought you'd never ask." He put a hand out for her and
moved to stand.
