D'ale

D'ale

Gilsha sipped at her mug of klah, looking at the brownrider through the
vapors gently rising from it. "Your friend alright? You left in a
rather big hurry the other day."

He smiled "Yes," he said with humor in his voice. "He'd just found out
he was going to be a father and wanted to talk and celebrate. It's a
pretty big deal when you get that kind of news."

"I would imagine so. Anyone I know?" Gilsha was not one to dish out
the gossip, but she always had an ear out for a new tidbit of
information.

His eyes twinkled. "Well it isn't my news so I'll let him tell when
he's ready. Though I doubt you'll know both parties."

"Too bad I don't have some interesting news of my own to pique your
curiosity."

Gilsha's lip curled a bit as she reached for a pastry. "Yes, that is
too bad. Now you'll just have to rely on your charms to keep me
entertained."

"Well I could sing or play my gitar if you want entertainment" he
offered in his mellow baritone.

"You're afraid I'll find your charms lacking?" she asked innocently.
"That's very pessimistic of you."

"Oh I'm not afraid at all." he grinned.

"Good, I would hate to think that I had battered down your ego already.
Usually it takes a man of your self-confidence at least two more
meetings before he tries to give up getting me into his furs."

"My dear Gilsha, I would not insult you by saying that wasn't in my
mind, but I really do enjoy your company."

"A relief indeed, thank you," she grinned, pushing the plate towards
him. "You earn a treat for that."

He smiled and leaned toward the plate. Selecting a small morsel from
it. He held it up "you first." he said with a smile and held in front
of her lips.

She smiled, though she reached up and tore off a small corner. Holding
it up she gave him a polite little bow. "How kind of you to share."

He popped the rest into his own mouth even though she'd robbed him of
some fun. "It's in my nature to share. I find a great deal of pleasure
in sharing."

"As do I. I think sharing is highly underrated among young people these
days. Those darn selfish, self-centered little brats... Oh yes, how's
your son?" she asked, her eyes sparkling teasingly.

D'ale laughed and continued to grin entertained by her wit. "Sharing
is paramount to a great relationship. Of course the ladies always get
more shares." he twinkled at her. "K'ale isn't as selfish as some I've
heard. He tends to take after his father in that."

"I'm sure he's not," Gilsha reassured him. "I can't wait until that
beautiful brown of his grows up. Will you be so willing to share with
your son when you're both going after the same pretty green, I wonder."

D'ale was nothing if not proud of K'ale and Imalkyth. "Oh I doubt
there will be competition," he smiled "Chase is chase and it's up to
chance and great flying."

"It's not always up to chance or great flying," Gilsha pointed out.
Sometimes the winner was chosen, not lucky. "Certainly for gold Flights
that's so. There seems little left up to chance there, and is G'nir's
bronze really better than U'kaiah's?"

"I'd have to agree with you on the gold Flights," he said seriously.
"Have you ever chosen the winner?" he asked interested by the train of
thought. "Or just woken up with the one you wanted?"

"No, I always just leave it up to Pali to choose. I get to choose who I
want every other time, so I don't think it's fair I try to take that
choice away from her." Of course there was the time they misjudged her
cycle and happened to be at a Hold when her green rose. Then it was
neither one of their choices, but they had made the rather old rider on
watch happy! "Of course some Flights were more memorable than others."

"Of course," he smiled. "I don't get much choice either," he added
remembering the first time he'd awoken with an armful of male
greenrider. Of course he'd been as kind and considerate with him as he
had with any female rider. That was just his own nature, he was an
appreciative flight winner even though his own natural inclination was
toward the female population of the weyr. "Some flights can be
_very_memorable" he smiled again.

He lifted the wine bottle over her glass with a question in his eyes.

"No, thank you," she said with an appreciative smile. "I have a carrier
job for an extra mark this evening, and I always like to make a
favorable impression."

He smiled. "And I'm certain you do. Another time then?" He set the
bottle down without topping his own glass. Gilsha was pleasant company
and gave better conversation than most. "Perhaps next time I'll bring
my gitar."
