Briata

Briata

The blue was spread out in all his glory, sunning and trying his best to
catch a green's eye. Leith had been bathed and oiled so he was
particularly brilliant and he knew it. His eyes roamed the heights,
searching for a female that might be especially forthcoming.

Briata made her way through the bowl with long, steady strides. She
found her mind wandering as she made her way toward the beach. She
often took walks along it. It allowed her time to think. To
ruminate. Sometimes this was a bad thing and at other times it helped
her work through things. She glanced up at the sight of some movement
and caught sight of a brilliant blue. She smiled and waved toward the
creature, greeting him, then continued on her way.

}:A female:{ He watched her as she continued walking, unaware that she
could hear him. }:Mine might do well to say hello to someone like that:{

Briata turned and smiled at the thoughts from the blue. **Your rider?**
she queried, intended path forgotten for the moment.

}:Oh!:{ Leith's surprise was quick to register and the blue actually
almost jumped at the sound of another human's mindvoice in his head.
**How did that happen?**

}:Who is this?:{

**Briata.** The young woman knew most of the dragons of River Bluff and
she found it surprising that this one didn't know her, though his
mindvoice had a touch of familiarity to it that she couldn't quite
place. She lifted a hand and waved to the dragon again. **Down here.**

Leith finally understood who it was and the blue headed down there out
of curiosity. }:You are the one who can talk to us. The others have
said your name.:{

Briata's eyes followed the blue's descent and her lips curled up into a
smile. **Indeed, I can.** And it had been a saving grace sometimes. The
dragons had been a great comfort to her. **A pleasure to officially
meet you.**

}:I am Leith, great blue of River Bluff Weyr and lover of greens:{ he
announced himself officially as he touched down to see her.

**I am glad to make your acquaintance, Leith.** Briata drew closer and
reached out to caress the wondrous blue hide. **I hope the day finds
you well.**

}:I am well enough. You should say hello to my rider. He needs to know
more females. He doesn't chase them as often as I do:{ Leith dipped his
head to bring his whirling eyes to meet hers.

**I'm...not really the sort of female who likes to be chased.** Briata
had met some that did, but she wasn't going to join them.

}:Why? I thought all females liked to be chased. Without chasing, there
are no eggs:{ That was curious indeed.

**I'm not ready.** Briata honestly wasn't sure she would ever be ready
again. One divorce followed by the death of the man she had grown to
love, had weyrmated, his sudden loss still stabbed at her. **Not all
females like to be chased.**

}:You will rise again when you are ready. Eggs always make females
happy:{ He thought about that, seeing E'rae's daughter in his mindseye.

**Oh!** Briata knew that child, the image clear in her mind as the
dragon brought the image to his. **You're E'rae's lifemate**

}:Of course I am:{ Leith assured her, as if he could be nothing else.

**I've met him before. I used to care for his daughter when I worked
in the creche.** Though Briata hadn't seen either of them since she
had been accepted as an apprentice into the Weavercraft.

}:That is nice. If you like little ones then, why don't you want eggs?:{
Leith was beginning to be terribly confused.

**It's...a long story.** Well, it wasn't really that long of a story
but Briata
didn't really want to try and explain it to a dragon. **I should get
going. I have some work to do, but it was nice to meet you Leith."

If he was anything other than himself, he might have understood that
she was avoiding the question and him. }:It was nice to meet you too,
lady. Catch me later sometime:{

**Of course." Briata assured him, then turned to hurry off and tried
not to think about certain things - or a certain rider.
