Description: The boys try to help Cardella after her best friend has died
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 15 of Turn 6
The keening sound of the dragons hit Cardella like a wave of water.
One moment she'd been standing there, waiting for her friend to
re-emerge from /between/ and the next second it felt as though the
entire world had shifted upside down. As the sound of the dragons'
lament washed over her, she stood there, utterly still as her brain
tried to process.
**No! Awenth, stop that. Rama is coming back!** Cardella chided her
lifemate, though she knew with a sinking feeling that no matter what
she said, she couldn't change anything.
}:Hillith and hers are gone.:{
"No!" Cardella shouted the words both to Awenth and to any who may
have heard her. **We can go after her. She must just be lost!**
Cardella was already trying to climb back up onto Awenth, thinking she
could save her friend. **There has to be a way to bring her back.**
Tears were already streaming down her face, but she simply brushed
them aside as she planned a rescue for her friend.
"Cardella, stop!" G'wen had been running, looking for her ever
since Neath had landed. Out of breath but still a bit stronger than
the girl, he grabbed her around her hips and pulled her back off
Awenth. "Stop it! She's gone!"
"No!" She fought him, twisting in his arms as the tears continued to
fall. "I can save her. I know her better than anyone. I can bring her
back." She elbowed him in the chest as she tried to break free from
his grasp. "Let me go. I have to save her," she choked out the words
on a sob.
"Car, she's gone. Gone!" He grabbed her again after she had freed
herself with that jab. Panic at her own safety gave him the strength
to get her back down again.
"No! No!" She cried out, her voice rising in panic. She shook her head
violently as if by denying the truth that was before her she could
bring her friend back. Her struggles were subsiding some, but she
still fought the arms that held her. "I know she's out there. She
_HAS_ to be out there!" Her breaths were almost strangled and shallow
as the shock of the moment washed over her.
S'vin grabbed the girl by the shoulders and stared directly into her face.
"Look at me, girl. She's not here anymore, she's gone."
When he heard who had died, like G'wen, he had run as fast as he could
to get to Cardella. Between the two boys they got her completely off
Awenth.
She shook her head, trying to free herself from S'vin's grasp. Her
eyes were a bit wild even as tears coursed down her cheeks making it
near to impossible for her to see. "She can't be gone," she gasped
out, breathing quickly and shallowly. Her attempts to fight the two
boys dwindled as the reality of the situation seemed to finally come
down upon her shoulders. She was suddenly gasping for breath, almost
choking on the realization that Rama wasn't coming back. Her legs gave
way under her as she cried out in despair.
"I know sweetie, I know." S'vin held her as tight as he could and
sobbed. Behind her G'wen wrapped his arms around her and pressed his
forehead against her shoulders.
The boys were the only reason she remained in a standing position
whatsoever. She gasped out a sob, even as she tried to draw in a
breath. She found it almost impossible as visions of Rama and thoughts
of what had transpired seemed to swim around her head. In an instant
she'd begun to hyperventilate. Cardella simply continued to let out
tiny moans of sorrow even as she tried to gain control over her own
body. Nothing was working. "No, no, no," she kept repeating as she
leaned her full weight into the boys. It was almost as though all the
life had simply drained out of her.
Neath came over to lean her head against Awenth's, and Kadeth gently
nuzzled both the greens, just happy to be alive for the moment. The
boys just let her cry as all around them other weyrlings cried or
rallied in anger at what had happened.
She was beside herself with her grief. Cardella whimpered as her body
seemed to try and deal with the shock of the sudden loss of her close
friend. She suddenly found that she couldn't breathe. She was utterly
lost and felt as though she couldn't even remember to keep breathing.
}:Awenth, save her,:{ Kadeth pleaded. }:She needs you_now_:{
Awenth was distressed by her rider's condition, yet Kadeth's words
gave her the guidance she needed to regain control. }:I am here, mine,
we are all here. Breathe. You are safe. They will not be forgotten.:{
Cardella _did_ respond to her dragon's words, though she still found
things too difficult to handle. Awenth swung her head toward Kadeth
and Neath. }:Tell yours to take mine to the healers. She needs them.
Her mind is hard to reach.:{
The boys looked at one another. S'vin nodded and said, "I think I can
carry her, but you help me if she starts to fight." When G'wen
nodded, the taller boy picked her up, with the green weyrling's help.
The infirmary wasn't that far, he could make it. He would make
himself make it! Not wasting time telling G'wen to follow, S'vin
walked as fast as he could, Cardella in his arms. They could tell
J'darin later what they had done, now they had to help their friend.
