Description: Tiernan arrives to help out at the Dolphin Hall
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 2, day 25 of Turn 6
Jylanya awaited her appointment with the carpenter in her office. The
door to her personal rooms firmly closed with Flint safely tucked
inside. She never knew if a new person was feline friendly or not so
she erred on the side of caution. Otherwise the big black feline could
make himself at home on just about any level surface, including her
records or strangers laps. **Little hedonist**
She was thankful Qorri had been able to help her make contact with the
man who would be coming by to take the tour with her through the
damaged areas and hopefully help them get the casings and shutters
repaired and water proofed again.
Tiernan navigated through the corridors of the Dolphin Hall, vaguely
aware of where he was going. He'd visited the previous Headwoman, but
it had been some turns ago. Successfully finding the office, he
knocked lightly on the door. "Jylanya?" He called out.
"Yes, I'm here," she called. "Come on in." She figured it was the man
she'd been expecting and rose to greet him.
"Hello there, my name's Tiernan. I've been spending some time at the
Weyr, and Qorri mentioned that you might need some assistance with
some repairs out here?" He asked.
"Well met Tiernan," she extended her hand. "I'm Jylanya. New to the
Hall but trying to get a few things in order that have been left
untended for a bit too long." She smiled at the very nice looking man.
"We've had a string of hurricanes and some of our casements are in
real need of repair on the first two levels at least. Water proofing
too is probably in order but I can let you make that call. Are you
ready to do a walk through to see what exactly will need to be
repaired?"
"Certainly," Tiernan said. He assumed that no matter how bad the
status was, he would be able to handle the repairs. A building didn't
need to be nearly as waterproof as a ship, after all. "Lead the way,
Jylanya, and I'll see what I can do for you."
"Ok," she replied. "Follow me." She led him down the corridor to her
first concern which was a classroom that had been rendered unusable by
the most recent storm. The drudges had just closed it off until she'd
gotten here and had them clean it all up. The room was long and narrow
with tall windows at the other end. The desks and chairs had been
moved out until they would fix the room to make it usable again.
"The shutters from those large windows look like they got blown out?"
Tiernan asked for confirmation. "So I'll start with getting those
reinforced, and then take care of the damage from the wind and the
water." He walked around, taking a look at everything before stopping
at the windows. "This room does have an amazing view, though, doesn't
it?"
"Yes, I think so. I wasn't here at the time and they've been short a
Headwoman for a while now." She motioned for him to follow her. "That
sounds good," she said at how he was going to start. Then she walked
to the windows and looked out over the sea. "Yes it is quite amazing.
Even better upstairs on the second level in the quarters wings."
"What did you do before you came here?" Tiernan asked curiously. "I
assume that you didn't grow up around dolphins?" He'd noticed that the
woman still walked around as if she was new to the place, and he
wondered how a woman ended up working at a Hall, rather than saddled
down with a husband and kids.
She didn't much like to think about what she did before here but she
had a ready answer. "I ran my husband's hold, but he's gone now." She
gave an appropriate sad smile though the expression didn't begin to
touch her real feelings on the subject. "Oh no," she said to his
question about the dolphins. "We were far inland south of the Weyr."
"Are you from around here?"
"I'm so sorry to hear about your loss," Tierna said. "I was actually
born up North, and my parents moved to Topaz Sea Hold when I was a
little boy, and my father became a captain. We were some of the few
who chose to stay and rebuild after the storm that destroyed it. I
think if I hadn't have made it as a Seacrafter, I would have been a
Dolphineer."
"Then coming here is like coming home in a sense?" She smiled and
ducked her head momentarily. She supposed Kantorik's death was a loss
in some ways but she was finding her new life to be better. A new
chapter where anything could happen. "I'm finding a good home here.
The people are nice and very focused... well at least the crafters
are." She chuckled, "most of the staff had decided it was vacation
time. I had to remind them they were here to work. We're mostly
through that part now though."
"Yes, when the Steward's away, the Holders will play, that's what my
Da always said," Tiernan said, fighting back the feelings that came
when he thought of his Father. He still hadn't had time to straighten
that all out yet. "It's good to get a nice change of scenery every
once in a while, and to be able to start over," he commented.
"Certainly the truth," she smiled. "Both things." The men both in the
Weyr and the crafthall were much nicer on average than the men of her
experience in the holds where she'd lived. "So, when do you think you
can get started?"
"Well, I'd like a candlemark or two to get supplies together and to
make some measurements, but I should be able to get started today,"
Tiernan said. "Is there anything else that you needed to discuss with
me before I got started, or should you show me to the supply rooms?"
She was pleasantly surprised by his aggressive timeline and her smile
widened. "I'd be happy to show you to the store rooms. We have a
couple on each level and a vast unused space on the third floor." she
pulled her keys from where they hung on her belt. "This way," she said
as the lead him toward the nearest one.
