Arippa or Faldrimme

Faldrimme

Arippa knew he'd come. Mystery had been quick to report the arrival of
a dragon in the square and she'd run to the window to watch the top of
his dark head disappear into the main doors of the hall. Aunt Benani
had told her about then man and shown her the letter from his mother.
She was as as excited and inquisitive as any girl her age at the news
of a possible match.

Of course she knew that Uncle Zathris would have to approve as well as
her father but she knew she could wind Royan around her little finger
though she wasn't at all certain about her uncle. "Faldrimme, he's
come! He's down there talking to the Lord and Lady now!" She didn't
quite know what to do with herself and paced back and forth near the
window.

Then she stopped. "NO!" she told herself and took a deep breath
blowing it out slowly and pushing her hands toward the floor at the
same time. "I know, I'm going to dress in my new riding habit and then
I'll just be coming into the Hold when he's coming out!

Faldrimme raced to the window where her sister was standing. "Where is
he?" She asked, peering out, but not seeing anything. She frowned.
Then turned and watched her sister with a grin forming on her face.
"What are you up to, Arippa?" Faldrimme knew her twin was eager and
excited about this potential meeting, even while she, herself, felt a
twinge of unease at the thought of her sister marrying and leaving her
behind. Still she _was_ just as excited as Arippa by the prospect of a
match for one of them. The idea of romance was more than appealing to
her, though she still had other hopes and dreams for her own life as
well.

"How long do you think we have?" Arippa ran to the closet in their
shared chamber and pulled her riding habit from the rack and began
undressing. "I'm going outside." She stopped a moment and looked at
her grinning sister. "I want to see what he looks like!"

Faldrimme smiled at her sister, shaking her head slightly at her enthusiasm.

"Best not let father or Lord Zathris catch you. You're _not_ supposed
to interfere yet and you know it!"

"That's why it will be an accidental meeting," she said and her
fingers made quotes in the air as she said accidental. She stripped
off her day dress and pulled on the habit. Then she held it tight
against her small bosom and turned her back to her sister. "Fasten
me," she demanded with an excited smile.

Faldrimme shook her head, but smiled. She moved forward quickly and
slipped her fingers under the clasps, tightening the dress for her
sister.

"I do hope he's handsome," Faldrimme said. "What do you think he'll be like?"

"Well he has dark hair and he's tall. That's good I think. But I'd
like to see his eyes." Of course in her heart she wanted him to be
handsome too. "If he has kind eyes it would make things easier I
think."

Faldrimme sighed, but smiled all the same. "I'm sure he will be kind.
Papa would not allow anything else for either of us and you know it."
She finished helping her twin get dressed, shaking her head slightly.
"You'd best be careful though, else Papa catches you and tosses you
over his knee like he used to when we were younger!"

"Oh I will," she promised and dashed out the door with her little blue
fluttering after her. She lifted her skirts in a very unladylike
manner and dashed down the back stairs and out the side door.
Recovering her breath she walked slowly toward the stables and then
turned and walked slowly back toward the front door. Mystery popped
back to chatter at her and she closed her eyes and took a deep breath
as she rounded the corner.

"Oh hello," she greet the tall dark stranger. She hoped it came off as
casually greeting just anybody. She couldn't help the spark of
interest as she stared up into the _most_ wonderful pair of eyes.

"Good afternoon," Namiren said, smiling winningly at the young woman.
He wasn't quite certain that she was Arippa, as the sisters were
identical after all, but he had a sneaking suspicion that she'd
engineered the meeting. Crafty. He liked that. "I don't believe we've
met," he said, feigning ignorance to her ruse. "My name's Namiren, I'm
the Holder of Green Valley. And you are?" The words came smoothly off
his tongue with an eloquence that was obviously practiced.

She liked his voice and easy manner. He was quite charming and in those
few words spoken with such friendliness she resolved to like him.
Though they were different shades, blue eyes met blue eyes. "Well met
Namrien," she said politely, the very model of a young lady. "I am
Arippa."

"It's a pleasure to meet you Arippa. I was just heading down to the
Dining Hall to get something to eat. Would you care to join me?" He
asked, smiling winningly down at the young woman.

"Oh yes," she smiled. "That would be lovely." She liked his easy
manner and his smile, so friendly like. She turned to lead the way if
he didn't know it. "This way," she said.
