Bryvin

Bryvin

She had slowly but surely been selling some of her creations. Parale
was eager to prove her dyes at this seahold. It helped that people
here tended to wear brighter colors than her family at Garnet Valley.
She guessed it was the coastal style coming out.

Bryvin had been planning after his most recent meeting with the Lord
Holder and part of their intent for the upcoming gather was boat
races. He wanted to decorate the harbor with some gaily colored flags
and not only that. He'd searched his recent memory for more and
remembered the newly arrived couple. The wife had made some
interesting things for their family as he recalled. So, he resolved to
pay her a visit.

It was with this intent that he arrived on her doorstep with his
canine Captain at his heels.

She heard the noise and assumed it was one of the children so Parale
got up from her workbench and came toward the door. When she opened
it, she was surprised to see the Steward there. "Good day sir," she greeted.

"Good day," he replied. "Are you all settled in?" He wouldn't come
straight to business until they'd had a little bit of polite small talk.

"Oh yes, I've had plenty of time to get used to this place now." She still
missed her home from time to time, but she always would. Garnet Valley
and Sunstone were very different.

"Good good," he said. "I hope you're growing to like it here. I know a
move like you've made can be difficult in adjusting." He smiled
slightly. "Down Captain," he commanded and the canine laid down and
waited patiently for his master tongue hanging as his eyes followed
the man.

Parale looked down at the creature. She had never been partial to animals,
though she understood their usefulness in most situations. "Umm would you
like to come inside..?"

"Certainly," he said with a smile. "Stay," he said to his faithful
companion and the canine's head lowered to rest on his paws.

She was thankful for that. It looked like it would dirty her floor. As
the steward
came inside, she shut the door behind him.

As he entered the home he saw the improvements she had obviously made
here and there. The touches of color. "I had remembered that you were
making clothing for your husband and children and using some rather
special dyes." He turned to face her. "I have an offer for you."

Parale liked the sound of that. "Aye?"

"We'll be having a gather here soon, and among the activities will be
boat races. We'll need to make sure we have plenty of colorful
pennants around the harbor and marking the course. Do you think you're
up to that?"

Parale's eyes widened. **A job and for the Hold no less! Ioven will fall over**
"Well, would the fabric be provided? I can dye and sew without a problem.
How long until the Gather?"

"We still have more than two months, and yes the cloth will be
provided to you to dye and then return to the weavers to be made up
into the flags. Or, do you also wish to make up some of the flags if
you were provided with the patterns?" He was interested in how far she
wanted to go-all unrecognized-for women were not formally allowed to
craft.

"It doesn't matter. All good Hold women know how to sew so I could do it
if you'd like. It's up to you." Parale was proud, thinking her own skillset was
better than some of the Weyr women she knew who couldn't do anything.

"Alright," he smiled. "Good bright dyes now," he held up a finger.
He'd seen some of her work yet knew the blame would rest on him if
they didn't come out the way Lord Morin liked. "I'll make sure you
have whatever you need. We want the Hold to show well with our newly
acquired status."

"Aye. Will there be many others coming in for this gather then?" Curious,
she was already thinking about what might be available for purchase or trade.
There were some things she might hope to acquire.

He smiled, "Yes this will be our first gather as a major hold and
_Lord_ Morin wants it to be very special." He put a little stress on
the Lord part so she would realize that since their status had changed
to that of a Major Hold there would be a great deal of interest both
from the other holds and the Weyr.

"Are the Weyrleaders coming?" Parale had seen them at Garnet Valley a few
times and she had to say River Bluff's new queen was huge and beautiful.

"We've no confirmation as yet," he said. "But they were invited.
They've already arranged for Lord Morin to attend the upcoming
hatching." Of course that last would be common knowledge by now but it
spoke well for their status with the Weyr.

"Oh well that's nice." Parale had never been to a hatching. She didn't know
what dragonets looked like. "I suppose I better get started then. Will
the cloth be delivered or do I need to pick it up?"

"I'll see to it that it's delivered and send them back when it's
ready." He turned back toward the front door. "How long do you think
you'll need?"

"Well if it's as many as you said, I'd say a good few sevendays. They'll have to
soak in the dye and I'll have to gather the things I need to make that much. And
then wash and sew them.." She nodded, thinking three sevendays would work.

He nodded. That was about what he'd expected and from the work he'd
already seen he didn't worry about the end product. "Very well, I'll
send someone with the fabric later today."
