"This is good jerky..." he said as he took a bite out of the stick of
meat while they walked through the stalls. The bluerider was enjoying
the day so far. He didn't know any of the folk here except fellow riders
they passed, but E'rae was thankful for the weather.
"And this bubbly is fantastic," K'mai muttered, his mouth half full.
"Are you going to buy anything?" He'd forgotten to ask as they'd
started walking. He was on the lookout for something to give Werenn.
It didn't have to be anything large, but something suitable.
"If something catches my eye." K'mai stuffed the last bite in his mouth.
"You've got berries all over your face you know," E'rae remarked
disapprovingly. Seeing some folks looking their way, he felt a bit of
embarrassment and then shrugged it off. K'mai deserved to enjoy
the pie after all.
K'mai rubbed a hand across his face and licked his lips for good
measure. "Presentable?"
"Just hold still." Frowning, E'rae pulled a kerchief from his pocket.
Licking the cloth, he brought it up to the other rider's face. With a
few quick swipes, he managed to get the leftover juice off. "There.
And you can have this." He offered the stained kerchief.
"Why thank you." K'mai laughed and stuffed it into the pocket of his
trousers. When he looked up, a young woman at one of the stalls drew
his attention. "Let's do a little browsing." The stall had a variety
of jewelry and he leaned over to admire a pendant, giving him an
excuse to get closer to the woman.
"Browsing...uh huh." He shook his head but he followed K'mai, looking
at the jewelry and briefly wondering if Jaylene would wear anything that
gaudy. Deciding probably not, he put it back down. Not like he had that
much to spend anyway.
"This is lovely. Almost as lovely as you." K'mai smiled at the woman.
She looked at his knots and blushed a little. "Thank you, dragonrider."
E'rae listened to that and almost chuckled. The bluerider could see the
writing on the wall. K'mai had to be careful with holder girls, though. He
could end up angering some man or might end up with himself a wife without
thinking. "Oh yea thank you. Are you gonna buy it hm?"
"No, just admire." K'mai looked at the woman instead of the jewelry.
Her blush deepened. "I should ... go find my husband."
"Going so soon? What a shame."
The bluerider finished looking at the table nearest to him. He heard what
the woman said and then K'mai's reply. **Not good. Not good at all** He
supposed the woman could take care of herself though. "Yes, what a shame
though I'm sure your husband's looking for you."
"Yes." She backed away. "Good day." She dropped a brief curtsey and
hurried away.
K'mai sighed. "Why, E'rae, I get the feeling you don't approve."
"It'd be different if she wasn't married and made the choice. Thing is for
holders, adultery is a bad, bad thing. Life for them isn't like like for us.
There's also the problem of angry husbands." The bluerider certainly didn't
want to end up helping K'mai escape some fracas. He wanted to enjoy the
gather.
K'mai rolled his eyes. "You're so _serious_. I was just having some
fun." He didn't appreciate being lectured like he had no idea what
life was like outside the Weyr.
"Yes I am serious." It was one thing to have fun, but another to cause
issues. Being inside the Weyr and outside of it were different. "Just
thinking of how we're supposed to be representatives for the Weyr
when we're out of it."
"Then I guess I shouldn't tell you about the Lord Holder's son I had
fun with a few turns ago." K'mai stepped away from the jewelry stall.
E'rae shook his head, looking up into the nice blue sky. "Yeah please
don't." He left the jewelry stall himself, wandering into another one
where he found some beautiful knives. **Maybe I need a new hunting
knife**
"So what are you doing later today?" K'mai asked, trying to bring it
back to a friendly subject.
"Actually, I was going to see if Jaylene was going to be here for the
dancing," he admitted carefully.
"Ah, yes, dancing. That should be fun." But being at a Hold meant
K'mai's dance partner choices were limited. Too bad, there were some
cute men around here.
"For now, let's go terrorize the young holder men. Make them think they
might get searched eh?" No one would know Leith wasn't a searchdragon.
It was a bit fun sometimes.
"I don't know. Is that really _proper_?" K'mai raised an eyebrow. "I
mean, we're supposed to be representatives of the Weyr."
E'rae frowned, looking over at K'mai. "Allright, you pick something then."
"I don't know about you, but I'd like some more food." Everything
looked so delicious. "Then we can find somewhere to relax until the
dancing."
"Fair enough though I think I need to find a new hunting knife, that is if they
have anything reasonably priced." He wasn't quite that hungry, but he could
drink and people watch.
"Eat then shop?" K'mai suggested, his irritation with E'rae forgotten.
"Aye, let's follow your nose to the food then." Trusting K'mai to find it, he
followed along beside him through the gather aisles. He caught some glances
their way as they passed but put it out of mind.
