E'ron arrived late to the gather. He'd been busy sleeping in and then
eating. He didn't do the first often and the latter required time and
attention, since he was still growing. Anyway, he finally made it and
started the usual wander through the craft stalls to look at things he'd
probably never buy.

"You know, you could get a better one of those at the stall down the row
there," D'lorn remarked as he spotted the young bluerider looking. The older
greenrider had already made a complete round of everything.

E'ron shrugged. "I don't even know what it's for," he admitted. It was a
strange looking contraption.

"Well if you don't know, you probably don't need to be fooling with it, to
be honest." D'lorn shook his head at the young man's confusion. He himself
had been there once upon a time, but these days he was a bit more
knowledgeable.

"Good point," E'ron agreed. "Curiosity killed the feline after all."

"Curiosity isn't always a bad thing. You should just make sure you're doing
the right thing before you head right into it." He sighed and remembered
mistakes he'd made before he'd figured himself out on the hatching sands.
"D'lorn, green Villith, of River Bluff."

"E'ron. Blue Feykenth's rider, from Dolphin Cove, apparently too impulsive
for his own good." he smiled.

"Well you're young. I was impulsive then too. After so many turns though,
I've managed to learn the error of my ways." He smiled, hoping it came off
as humorous as he thought it sounded to himself.

"I hope I have myself sorted out before my joints begin to creak as well,"
E'ron replied, his eyes sparkling, hoping his words would be taken in good
humour as well.

"Hey hey, I'm not that bad. I can still run around the dragonets and their
riders so that counts for something." He thought about his charges back at
the Weyr and hoped they'd be doing allright. Someone was on duty, of course,
so nothing bad should happen.

"I'm sure you can." E'ron agreed. "Have you bought anything today?"

"Yeah got some herbs from the herbalist lady. She says it'll help the cough
I get after threadfall. All that ash, you know." He almost coughed just
thinking about it. "You?"

E'ron shrugged. "I might get some cakes for midnight snacks, but mostly I
just came to have a look around. It's nice to see a place other than the
same old Weyr walls."

"Mm yeah, Villith and I go flying around every so often. Most of the time,
though, the Holds don't want us around unless we're on search. Take
advantage while you can." He personally was considering the food stalls as
the smells came to him over the crowd.

"Good point." E'ron's eyes scanned the crowds, looking at the variety of
people. "it looks like all Pern turned out today."

"Indeed, or at least half the southern continent. They say the new Lord
Holder has that effect on people." D'lorn hadn't met the man and probably
never would, but he wasn't really the ambitious type so he couldn't
understand it.

E'ron shrugged. "I'd rather have Feykenth than a hold. Each to their own.
Hey, is that roast herdbeast over there?" he pointed.

"Smells like it," D'lorn replied, following E'ron to where the smell was
coming from. Indeed there was roast herdbeast and sausage, amongst other
things. Happy with this find, he quickly engaged the butcher to get himself
a meal.

E'ron followed suit and was soon armed with a plate of steaming meat, bread,
and some fresh vegetables. "Want to get a seat?"

"Ummm...over there?" Pointing towards the space to the left in the tables
where there seemed to be a few seats, D'lorn headed towards it, looking
forward to the meal.

E'ron followed and managed to slip into the last seat at the same table as
D'lorn. Without further word for now, he started eating. It wasn't as good
as his Weyr's food, he decided, but it was pretty good anyway.

The greenrider also started to eat, digging into this rare feast. When his
plate was appropriately half empty, he settled back, eating slower. "Where
did you Impress then?"

"Dolphin Cove." E'ron replied simply. "I can't imagine being anywhere else.
You?"

"Far Island Weyr," he answered easily. D'lorn had been at River Bluff for
some time, but he hadn't met Villith there. He did like the opportunity of
working on the weyrlingstaff, however. Taking another bite, he remembered
his days as a weyrling.

"Oh, why'd you transfer?" E'ron asked between bites.

"Came at the beginning of the Pass when the wings were shot to shells. They
needed riders so we offered and been here ever since. Course I'm trader
blood so I was all over the place before that anyway." D'lorn had a natural
tendency not to stay in one place too long, though for now River Bluff was
home.

E'ron nodded. "Where else have you been?" He'd yet to see much of the
planet, but he wanted to.

"Well once I got Villith, I've gone lots of places. Every now and again we
sneak away when we can. I find the coastal climate here to be easier to deal
with though." A lot of folks said it was easier on the joints.

E'ron shrugged."I like it. Have you ever seen snow?" He never had and was
curious.

"Yeah. Wet, cold stuff. Not very fun to be in, though it does mean that we
don't have to fly fall." He supposed there were both advantages and
drawbacks to weather like that. They had snow at Dragonsfall.

That didn't sound as exciting as E'ron had hoped. "So Thread just...
Freezes? And dragonriders just let it fall?" he shuddered.

"Yep it freezes and turns into ash. So there's nothing live falling." D'lorn
had never seen it himself, but as a rider he knew about all the conditions
they might have to fight in. He had to teach his kids so they'd be prepared
if they ever transferred.

"Yes, but..." E'ron shivered. "I just seems...'wrong somehow."
?Same thing happens to us when it rains. The stuff drowns and doesn?t
live.? That was one good thing about a hurricane. D?lorn didn?t have to fly.

"True. I suppose that's something I have to get used to." E'ron shrugged.
"I hope to have plenty of time for that."

?Dolphin Cove actually gets them pretty regularly, as do we, so I?m sure it
won?t be too much longer.? D?lorn counted it as one of the perils of a tropical
residency. You got mostly good weather, but then the thing tried to blow the
place down.

E'ron shrugged and finished the food on his plate, wiping it clean with his bread.
Why waste a crumb! "I think I have room to squeeze in some dessert," he patted
his belly. He was stuffed, but that rarely stopped him!

?Plenty of good looking stuff around here I will say. I?m partial to the cheesecake
myself.? It was something light and fluffy and yet just sweet enough that it satisfied
his desires. Plus it could usually be added to fruit or something else nice.

"I didn't see any of that," E'ron's eyes lit up. "That sounds like just what I need."
Maybe more _want_ than need!

?It was over at the back end of the bakers? stall. They have it in boxes but they?ll
sell it by the slice.? D?lorn was good for ferreting things out. The greenrider looked
around quite a bit before he settled on something usually.

"Oh, I hadn't noticed, I was too busy enjoying the smells!" E'ron grinned. "I might go
and get some then. Want me to get you a piece while I'm there?"

"Sure if you don?t mind," D'lorn readily agreed. He wasn't about to turn down cake.
He leaned back in his chair, digesting his food.

E'ron pushed back his chair and went in search of cake. It wasn't hard to find, he just followed his nose. "Can I help you?" The apprentice behind the stall was small but had a cheerful look about him.

"Yeah, I was after cheesecake." E'ron grinned, looking about at all the tasty choices.

"Excellent choice!" the apprentice grinned back. "With berries or citrus?"

E'ron looked back toward D'lorn, wondering which he'd prefer. He turned back. "um, berries should do fine." The apprentice cut two generous pieces and put them on plates. E'ron paid for them and walked back, careful with his precious, tasty cargo.

When it came, D?lorn thanked him easily and then grabbed the piece, looking at it before
he took the first bite. The greenrider smiled as he savored it, thinking it was some tasty stuff.
Whoever had made the cheesecake knew what they were doing.

E'ron really had nothing much to say. He was too busy with one of this favorite past times, eating!
