Description: The Weyrleader interviews one of his newest wingriders
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 5 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: P'nal, Cardella
K'ale had been in the fighting wing now for almost two months and
other than one close call had been trying to maintain a steady
progress. He took every criticism to heart just like his da had told
him. The other riders would want him to succeed because when he did
they were all safer.
Now he'd received a summons from the Weyrleader and he was nervous. He
climbed the stairs to his office and after taking a deep breath,
knocked on the door.
"Enter!" G'nir called. He had the boy's file open on his desk. After
two month from graduation, it was time to see how he had done and if
he had some areas that need special attention.
K'ale scrubbed his damp palms on the front of his legs and then walked
in. "You wanted to see me sir," he asked as the walked toward the big
desk.
"Yes, take a seat," G'nir gestured towards the chair. "It's been two
month since your graduation. How do you feel you're settled in to the
Fighting wing?" he started with a guestion.
"Aye sir," he said and took the chair the Weyrleader had indicated.
"It's difficult but not more so than I thought it would be." K'ale had
been working harder than he remembered working in a very long time to
make sure he was up to speed with all the wing maneuvers.
"Are you getting along with your new wingmates?" G'nir asked.
Frictions in personal relationships could turn the whole wing's mood
sour.
"Pretty well I'd say sir," he answered. "The group seems close knit
and they've welcomed Cardella and me both." He really did feel part of
the wing now. Even after Imalkyth's short outage for wingstrain they
didn't seem to want to pick on him... much.
"Good to hear. How is Imalkyth's wing?" G'nir said and asked. He had
of course the dragonhealer's reports, but he wanted to hear the boy's
insight.
"He's doing well and we're being careful not to overfly again." K'ale
had made sure he followed the dragonhealer's instructions to the
letter and didn't push to get back into Threadfall too soon.
"Good. Those kind of injuries can become chronic if they are not
healed right. But he's young, he'll recover quickly," G'nir said with
a nod. "Have you gotten hang of the drills? Anything you need help
with? Speak honestly, I rather had you correct any failings or errors
now when you're still new than try to correct them Turns from now when
they have become a bad habit. If you have issues, I'll assign one of
the experienced riders or P'nal to help you with them."
K'ale agreed with G'nir on Imalkyth's health. That was the last thing
he wanted to do. "I've been studying as much as I can on the drills
and various formations. I think I've been doing alright," he smiled.
"At least that's what my section leader says." He had still gotten
tense during night drills. That was until they'd actually flown thread
at night and then all the training came into play. P'nal had been
right. When all the wing was flaming it made a big difference.
G'nir nodded with his assesment. The boy was good adition to the wing.
"Just keep up the good work and you'll be like father one day," he
said encouragingly.
That brought a giant smile to his face. "I'm glad you think so sir.
I'll do my best."
"I do expect that from my riders. I would be disappointed if you did
any less," G'nir said, fixing the young man a glance that told him
disappointing the weyrleader was not very wise move.
"Yes sir," he sat up a little straighter. "I will sir!"
"Good. Carry on, brownrider," G'nir responded.
K'ale recognized a dismissal when he heard one. "Thank you sir," he
said as he rose and turned for the door. He walked just a little
taller at the Weyrleaders praise.
