Description: Naton asks Milga's help on his new project.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 7, day 20 of Turn 6
Naton peeped his head around the door the the apprentice dormitory,
scanning the room quickly to see if the junior apprentice he was
looking for was around. When he spotted her, the Journeyman headed
towards Milga with a warm smile. "Milga, dear, do you have a moment
for your good ol' teach'?" he asked as he flopped down in a chair next
to her.
"Of course, journeyman Naton. About what?" Milga asked, her tone
curious. She liked Naton, he had somehow managed to gain her trust and
become one favourite teachers.
"Well, my dear Milga, you might have heard some whispers about a
certain Journeyman going for Mastery?" She probably had, rumours like
that usually travelled fast. "I have been given permission to borrow a
few apprentices every now and then, to help out with various tasks,
and I was hoping you're game."
"I would love to help you," Milga said with delighted tone. She was so
thrilled she nearly clapped her hands.
"I had a feeling you would say that," Naton grinned. "Now, before you
accept, I have to warn you that this first task is pretty boring. Do
you still feel up to the task?"
"Yes," she replied. "It can't be more tendious than gutting tons of packtails."
"Hmm.. I'd think so, yes," Naton said with a grin. "Well, I will ask
our good Master of Apprentices if he can put some assisting on your
schedule. I'll try to replace the more tedious chores." Naton said
with a wink. "Have you heard anything about my project as of yet?"
"Only that you're aiming for the mastery," Milga replied.
"That's right," Naton replied with a nod, the thought still bringing a
silly grin to his face. "Well, I'm hoping to design a light dolphins
can wear on their heads, to make them easier to see for dolphineers or
victims during a night time rescue."
"Well, that could be useful. But where do you find anything that burns
underwater?" Milga said and asked curiously.
"I'm hoping to be ussing glows, in some kind of watertight casing.
It's something I need to talk to the Smiths about," Naton said,
appreciating Milga's quick thinking. "I knew there was a good reason I
picked you as my help!" The dolphineer looked at her proudly.
"Thank you," Milga said, pleased and shy at the same time.
"No thanks needed," Naton said cheerfully. "Now, as for your first
task, I want to make sure there isn't someone who already tried this
out in the past that I'm not aware of. So we need to go through the
Hall records and see if there's anything recorded about something
similar. That's what I'd like you to help out with first."
"Yes, sir," Milga said and grimaced. She wasn't very good at research.
Then she perked up, perhaps she could get better at it with practice,
and it sounded like she was going to get lot of practices.
"Thank you," Naton said, pretending not to have seen the grimace. He
hoped that giving Milga this task would help her build her confidence
a little. "So, would you like to venture into the record room with me?
Or do you have other things you should be attending, first?"
"How about going there together? I've not overly familiar with it,"
Milga asked. Actually, she had avoided the records room like it was
plague-ridden.
"Yes, that was my plan," Naton said with a smile. "Perfect, then, to
our feet!" And the Journeyman jumped up from his chair energetically
and made way for the door, holding it open to his assistant with a
grin.
Milga got up in such a rush that she banged her toes. Biting her lip
to hide a whimper, she hobbled after him with one foot. She was still
middle of a growth spur.
"Careful there!" Naton chuckled softly. He remembered the challenges
of adolescence all too well himself. Even with slowing his pace a
little for Milga's sake, they soon arrived in a small office with
stacks and stacks of ledgers against the walls. "Welcome to the record
room," he offered with a small grin.
"Uh-huh! How do you find anything from here?" She asked.
Naton pulled out a huge ledger and placed it on the table. "You use
this," he said with a grin. "There's a chronological list in the front
and one grouped by subject in the back. Say I want to know anything
anyone here ever wrote on diving goggles, I look it up under goggles
in the back. I'll find a list of every record about diving goggles
with a code next to it. The codes refer to those on those shelves, do
you see them?"
"Yes, I see. Clear as a cloudless sky," Milga grinned. She was quick
to catch on.
"Wonderful!" Naton said with a happy smile. He had picked the right
apprentice in this, he was pretty sure of that. "I need to start
working on my request for the Smith Hall, to ask if they're inclined
to help me out, so can I leave you to this for a little while? I'll
grab my stuff and come work here, so you can ask my questions if you
have any."
"Sure," Milga nodded. "This should keep me busy for awhile," she
remarked, eyeing the shelves.
"Alright, I'll be back in a jiffy, then," Naton said before heading
off with a wave and a smile.
