His Brother's Gitar

Writers: Arale, Suzee
Date Posted: 4th August 2012

Characters: Kwiksol, Norcen
Description: Kwiksol is sought after for his gitar fixing skills.
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 8, day 6 of Turn 6

Norcen strode through the corridors of the Harper Hall with a sense of
nosalgia. After all, he'd lived more time in the Hall than he had in
the small cothold his family maintained and even with the fire and
rebuilding it was more home to him than there. It was nice to return.
even if the reason was something of an annoyance. He nodded at
familiar faces as he made his way to his destination, and rather hoped
that his business would keep him overnight at least so he could catch
up with a few of his former Masters while he was here and explore some
of the changes that had been made with the new construction.

Reaching the door he'd been directed to and finding it partially open,
the journeyman rapped a short knock as he poked his head in. "Hello?"

Kwiksol, looked up from the drumhead he was working on at the hail.
"Hello," he answered. "What can I do for you?"

"Ah, just the man I was looking for," Norcen smiled. He didn't know
this journeyman personally, though of course he'd seen him around.
But, he knew the man's reputation and had that knowledge reinforced
via recommendation. "I've got a bit of a problem, I'm hoping you can
help me with." He lifted the case he was carrying.

"Over there," he said looking at the instrument shape and directing
him to the proper workbench. "Let's see," he said as he walked over
wiping his hands on a cleaning cloth.

Norcen set the case on the workbench and opened it, revealing a
gitar. It was well kept, but obviously old, with the varnish worn in
places where arms had rubbed while playing and tiny bumps and
scratches on the edges. He lifted it carefully and turned the
instrument over revealing a hairline crack running along the back.
"One of my students dropped it," he explained with a slight grimace.

"Ah," Kwiksol said running knowing fingers over the surface of the
instrument. He carefully felt the crack. "I can fix this,"
he said. He looked up at the man. "This instrument has seen a lot of
play."

"It was my brother's," Norcen's voice was quiet as he watched his
fellow journeyman examine the gitar.

"It isn't too bad at the moment," he mused as he lifted the instrument
up to the light. He looked through the sound hole to see if there was
light coming through the body but it looked whole. "It looks like
maybe the seam is separating a little glue and pressure should fix it
right up." He smiled at Norcen.

"Good," he felt himself relax at the prognosis. This gitar was one of
the few things he had of his brother. It might be foolish then to let
his students near it, but one of his brother's mottos had been that
instruments were meant to be played. "Will you need to keep it?"

"Yes," he said. "For a few days. It will take a little time for the
glue to set." He strummed a few chords and heard a little buzz that
wasn't coming from the sound hole. "Hmmm," he mused and tried again.
"I'm going to look at the frets too. One of them may be loose."

Norcen smiled and nodded, "Thanks, I appreciate it."
