Outdoors Aren't For Me

Writers: Eimi, Paula
Date Posted: 1st November 2012

Characters: Fymer, Morin
Description: Fymer and Morin talk business and Fymer's sore ankle.
Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 10, day 9 of Turn 6
Notes: Mentioned: Parale

Fymer knocked before entering the Lord Holder's office. He was visibly
limping. He had twisted his ankle when spying that woman, Parale, and he
had seek out healers afterwards. He had been told it was just a sprain.
Itwas painful though.

"Ah, Fymer. Come in here. I need you to help me with some legal
language here," the Lord Holder said, pointing to a document he had been
trying to read for nearly half a candlemark.

"Yes, my Lord," Fymer replied. "I also have the documents of Alsinder's
hold for you," he continued, moving slowly across the room.

The limp was quite noticeable. "What happened to you?"

"I twisted my ankle while having a walk. Outdoors does not agree with
me,"Fymer said with irritated tone.

Since when did Fymer just walk for the pleasure of it? "Were you
visiting someone in particular?"

"Naah, just walking around and thinking. Next time someone suggest
walking as a good way to clear your thoughts, I'll hit them with inkwell,"
Fymer grumbled.

"Is there anything you want to tell me?" Morin rather worried when
Fymer had thoughts to clear. It could mean he had debts in need of
paying and was trying to think of a way to break it to the Lord Holder.

Fymer shook his head. This time it was not his never ending gambling
depts. "It was nothing. Just that..." he shrugged and sighed. "I've been a
widower for a while and I miss woman in my bed." Especially after seeing
Parale. He never found pregnant women repulsive, like some men. Quite the
opposite, the way their breast swelled...

That got the Lord Holder's full attention. "Are you thinking of
marriage again?"

"It's not out of the question," Fymer replied. Of course, finding some
one willing marry him wouldn't be easy.

Morin just looked at him a moment before he snorted a "Huh." That was
information he would store away for later. "Did you see the healers
about your ankle?"

"Of course I did. They said it's sprained, wrapped it up, gave me
something for the pain and sent me away," Fymer told him.

"Are you supposed to stay off of it?" That would certainly limit his
message running, and he was one of Morin's main go-betweens.

"Actually no, I got instructions for opposite. I'm supposed to use it as
normal as possible, otherwise it could stiffen up and not move at all,"
Fymer said. He was bit unhappy with that prescription. It would be just
so much nicer to sit and prop up his ankle to a stool.

"Good, I have some errands for you." Morin could trust no one better
than Fymer on certain matters. "And I need you to look at this
contract. One of the workers on the new Hold slipped on the stairs and
now thinks he is due some compensation for working in hazardous
conditions. I'm not liable and I need you to make sure of that. You
can do that later, though. I need you to go down to the docks first."

"Yes, sir," Fymer said, suppressing a sigh. It was flattering that Morin
trusted him to handle them, but he still felt like draft beast.

"The 'Good Mariner' will be docking this evening. I need you to go down
and find out exactly what it's carrying and where it's bound for. I have a
feeling whatever it is, it isn't legal, and if that's the case, I want to
know. You know Bavil well enough to know when he's lying to you. At
least," he added dryly, "when there isn't a deck of cards in front of you."
Morin hoped to the Red Star Fymer was paid up with the 'good' captain.

"I'll keep the cards away while I'm conducting business," Fymer promised.

"The last port Bavil stopped in, a shipment of klah that was supposed to
be loaded onto the ship moored next to his went missing. His shipped
sailed out unusually early the next day. I'm guessing he had something to
do with it, and if he did, I want to know. I don't want him pulling a
similar trick on my docks." Most of their less honorable guests knew they
would never be welcome back if they tried to pull anything in Sunstone, but
every once in a while, one would get greedy and temptation would win over
better judgement. "The bags would be marked with Ancient Stones Hold's
crest."

"I know Bavil, if he tries to lie to me, I'll spot it," Fymer said with
soft malice. "And there's not a forger in Pern who could fool me!" He was
the master forger after all.

"Well, feel free to work off any debts with him you have or might fall into
by providing him with the proper documents he'll need." It saved Morin the
trouble of shelling out marks for the Harper's gambling habit.

Fymer just nodded at that.

"Well, take care of your ankle. And take these with you." Morin held the
contracts out for the Harper to take with him.

"Thank you for your concern, sir," Fymer said.
