Reven

Corowal studied the young man across his desk. Green Valley Hold was
turning out to be a headache. The hold was without a holder, again. He
had way too many minor holds like it. Namiren had foolishly gotten
himself killed. You would think holder would be more careful with his
life. And since he had no wife or children, it had left Corowal and
Sarban to search for next of kin. They had found this young man, a
cousin.

"So, you're Reven, right?" The Lord Holder asked slowly. His intense
gaze was meant to unnerve him.

"Yes sir." Reven confirmed with a nod of his head. He sat casually
before Lord Corowal but not disrespectfully. His humble Turns spent
fostering at Red Rush and working side by side in the fields had
taught him a lot about humility and respect. His willingness to take
on the Holdership at Green Valley was out of duty not greedy ambition.

"Tell me about yourself," Corowal asked. He already knew everything
there was to know about him, but he wanted to hear how Reven talked
about himself. It told him a lot about personality. Was he modest,
realistic, braggard?

"Well, I was born at Green Valley, and fostered to Red Rush when I was
just a child. I've spent my life since then working in the fields with
the people of Red Rush. Since its such a small holding it requires the
participation of everyone to maintain the crops. When word came that
Namiren had passed I returned to Green Valley." Reven explained
shortly.

"Do you think you can handle Green Valley hold? Being a holder is big
responsibility and Green Valley is bit larger than Red Rush hold?"
Corowal asked.

"Agreed, Lord Corowal, Red Rush is smaller than Green Valley, but I
feel that the work ethic that I learned at Red Rush has given me the
tools necessary to run Green Valley. I'm not saying I'll be perfect,
or maybe not as good as Namiren was, but I'll work hard every day, and
give hundred percent toward making Green Valley successful." The
answer was short, to the point, but truthful. Reven wasn't a quitter,
and he wouldn't let the people of Green Valley down.

Corowal nodded with approval. The young man may not be too eloquent but he
liked his attitude.
"What do you know about runner beasts? It's one of Green Valley's more
profitable trades and I know our master Aivorn has been working together
with Green Valley's stable master in some breeding project."

Reven nodded, he had heard as much from his parents who lived at Green
Valley, " I have to be honest with you, my area of expertise, you could
say, is in farming. My experience with runners is limited to riding and
that's about it. I am willing to learn, of course,"

"I tell you a secret. I don't have much experience about runner beasts
either. That's why we have people like master Aivorn," Corowal grinned.

"My thoughts exactly." Reven agreed, feeling instantly more comfortable
around Corowal.

Corowal had to admit that he liked this young man. "Do you have a family?
wife? children? Even a secret
illegitimate one?" he asked.

Reven laughed, "My parents are at Green Valley. I have no wife and if I do
have any illegitimate children they've been carefully concealed from me. So
I am pretty much baggage free."

"I suggest you find a wife and get a child on the way as soon as possible,
holder Reven. I'm running out of blood line here," Corowal replied drolly.

Reven chuckled, "I'll get right on that then."

"Good. Congratulations, Reven, Green Valley is yours. Take good care of it,
it's a beautiful place. I like to visit it myself," Corowal said.

Reven leaned forward and extended his hand to Corowal, "Thank you, sir, I
look forward to your visit."

"I expect you to offer me a drink at the Tavern then," Corowal shook his
hand.

"Count on it."
