D'ale

D'ale

D'ale walked into U'kaiah's office stripping off his flight jacket and
tossing on a chair as he passed. He made straight for the fresh pot of
klah and poured a hot mug to wrap his hands around while he waited for
the others.

U'kaiah was never one to make these meetings long. He had places to be.
People to meet. Or at least, one special person. "Right, where's
Kenza?" he asked, barely into the room but ready to get this over with.

She arrived just moments later, moving quickly towards the klah as
well. She nodded towards both men, just as eager as they were to get
the meeting over with, but also determined to make sure their wing was
the best it could be.

As she poured her klah she couldn't help but glance a bit overlong at
D'ale. They had kept apart for these many months now that he was the
Wingsecond, but she still missed him and the time they had spent
together deep inside her heart.

"So?" She asked as she drank from her klah, waiting for either man to
take the lead.

The chill was finally off his fingers as he sipped at his mug. He went
over to set it on the desk and pull up a chair. "Well we can't ignore
L'ten's lack of concentration any more." D'ale's anger was fairly
evident in his tone. "He very nearly flamed that poor weyrling."

"I don't think we were _ignoring_ anything, D'ale," U'kaiah said a
little defensively. The Wing and it's performance was ultimately his
responsibility, and while he understood what his Second was saying, it
stung. "I thought the best way to get him back on track was to get him
back up in the skies. It has worked before with other riders who have
lost a weyrmate."

"Perhaps what we need is a different approach," Kenza added. "I agree
that we need to get him back in the skies. It _is_ the best way to
move forward, but considering what's happened, we're going to have to
take more time L'ten." She knew how hard it was to come back. It took
determination, and lots of support from those who cared to make a
difference for her. Glancing around, she realized the two men in the
room _were_ two such men for her. If something happened, she knew they
would both be there for her. L'ten needed to know that he was just as
supported.

"Yes, I agree," he started. U'kaiah's defensiveness noted he closed
his eyes and shook his head. "But I don't want us to lose _another_
rider or weyrling just because he isn't ready yet. That's all I was
saying." He sat back with a shrug. "Maybe he needs a week in the
Queen's wing." At least that would take him out of the most dangerous
part of Fall.

"I was thinking more the weyrling wing." The last thing U'kaiah wanted
was for a distracted rider to guard their Queen. Or his Aileyan. "He'd
be safe there, he'd be useful, and he'd have plenty of time to heal."
That was where he had done the majority of his grieving after Jaela had
died, though his temporary demotion had been a punishment after throwing
N'vanik over a table in the dinning hall. Still, it may have been for
the best. "Either way, we'll be down another blue rider. There will be
holes needing to fill."

D'ale nodded his agreement. He looked at Kenza. She sometimes had her
finger on an upcoming young rider or one coming back from an injury
who might be a good flit. "Do we have anyone ready to fill the slot?"

"K'ren and his blue Thanoth have made a good recovery and is likely
ready to join the fighting wings again. Also, have you watched young
G'yet? He's still just coming into his own, but I see good potential
in that young rider." Kenza wanted nothing more than a strong wing for
them all to be proud of and to protect all of Pern. "The more
consistent and difficult threadfalls have really taken a toll on all
the wings. We need to bring in many more recruits, but I fear we may
not be able to train up the young ones soon enough if these injuries
and issues continue to plague us all."

"K'ren will probably move back into his old spot. G'yet has
potential, but too much confidence in his abilities. His skills
haven't caught up with his bravado." They had readjusted well enough
to compensate for K'ren's loss, but another bluerider was stretching
them thin. U'kaiah ran his finger absently over the small notch in
his ear, a habit he had developed of late. "We're only a few Turns
into this Pass. It's not going to get much easier. We're going to
have to learn to work with what we have."

"Perhaps I can help knock a bit of sense in G'yet. I do seem to have a
knack with helping to put some of our young ones in their place,"
Kenza grinned. "I think they have a hard time accepting that a
greenrider is giving the orders, but I _always_ enjoy showing them
exactly who is boss." Thoughts were already going through her head
about how to handle this particular young rider.

D'ale could vouch for her talent in that area. Once they'd had any
experience of her tart tongue they usually didn't want to get on her
bad side again. "Yes," was all he said with a smile.

U'kaiah also merely nodded his response to her bold statement. He knew
all too well how talented Kenza was at putting people, even her
Wingleader at times, in his place. "Then I will put you in charge of
getting G'yet up to speed. If he gives you too much trouble... Well,
you'll know how to handle him."

Kenza grinned a bit devilishly at her comrades. "You bet I will. He'll
be quivering in his wher-hide jacket when I'm done with him," she
quipped with a chuckle.

"I'm sure," D'ale smiled.

"It's settled then," U'kaiah threw back the rest of his mug of klah and
set it down on the table. Aileyan was waiting. "Meeting adjourned."
