Arippa

This morning she was going riding. Not without an escort of course.
Lady Felyna wouldn't have allow that. But she and Jeyme and a pair of
escorts were going to take a tour of the falls. It wasn't all that far
and the air was clear and cool as she came out of the Hold dressed in
her emerald green riding habit. Soft buff leather gloves were held in
one hand as she descended the steps.

Jeyme was happy to be going riding once more. The last time she went
out, she went out alone, ran into a holdless name Jenackt, and
received a severe scolding from Sarban. This time, however, the
Steward would have no room for complaint since she was going out with
a pair of male escorts and Lady Arippa, who she had begun to develop a
friendship with.

With her riding skirts on, Jeyme smoothed her hands over the soft
leather material, and then touched a tendril of her hair, the rest of
which was braided in a shiny coil down her back.

Reven waited at the bottom of the stairs, a pleasant smile on his
face, hands clasped patiently behind his back, feet shoulder width
apart. When he'd heard that a couple of ladies, namely Arippa, had
been in need of an escort out of the Hold on a riding trip he'd been
only too happy to volunteer. The woman, that he'd met only briefly,
intrigued him, and he wanted an excuse to see more of her. Not to
mention he was still waiting for Corowal's approval to take over Green
Valley, so while he wad detoured at Emerald Falls he decided he might
as well make the best of it.

Arippa held the front of her long skirt in one hand to keep it from
entangling her feet as she stepped down toward the waiting men. That
exposed a trim ankle when her riding boot touched the next stair. She
saw Reven looking up from the bottom of the stairs with an unreadable
but pleasant expression on his face and couldn't help but smile in his
directtion. "He is rather handsome, isn't he," she whispered to Jeyme.

"If by rather you mean extremely handsome, then yes, you are correct."
Jeyme laughed softly in return.

"Good day ladies. You are both looking well." Reven smiled and
extended his hand to Arippa while Jeyme took the extended arm of
Westyre, her escort.

Arippa placed her fingers lightly in his hand to be led to her runner.
"Thank you," she murmured and turned her attention to the runners.
She'd never seen this particular beast before but she looked spirited
and that suited Arippa just fine. "She's beautiful," she said running
her free hand over the mare's neck.

"Do you need a leg up?" Reven asked, reaching out to stroke the mare's flank.

Jeyme accepted Westyre's help up, giving him a gracious smile as she
adjusted her riding skirts and settled into the saddle.

"If you would," she smiled and turned toward him for the lift.

Reven wrapped his hands around Arippa's trim waist and easily lifted
her to the saddle. Turns of working out in the fields with the hands
had given Reven a rugged strength.

"There you are milady." He winked before turning and smoothly climbing
into the saddle if his own black mount.

Jeyme watched the exchange between Arippa and Reven with a secretive
smile. There was an obvious physical chemistry and tension between the
two.

"Shall we get started then?" Westyre said jauntily. He was a handsome
enough man in his mid thirties who had yet to take a wife; a perfect
escort for two single ladies.

Arippa was small and light but the ease with which he tossed her into
the saddle both surprised and pleased her. Her foot found the stirrup
almost instinctively and she gathered up the reins and patted the
runners neck as Reven mounted. Arippa had learned to ride under her
fathers rather stern tutelage and Royan had made certain his daughters
were excellent riders.

Pretty chestnut ears flicked back and forth and she could feel the
coiled spring of tension in her mount that told her this filly was
poised to run if she were given her head. She smiled and nodded at
Westyre's suggestion and followed Jeyme's mount, falling in next to
Reven. "Oh I have been so longing for a ride," she said brightly.

"I admit it's nice to see some of the landscapes around the Hold. I
haven't had the time to do so before." Reven said, his body swaying
smoothly with the steps of his mount. He looked over at Arippa, noting
that Red Rush didn't have a single woman that could compete with such
beauty, and he doubted the story was any different at Green Valley.

Arippa noticed his look and her eyes dropped back down to the ears of
her mount. A pretty pink blush crept up her cheeks thought it might be
hard to tell if it were the chill in the air or the intensity of his
regard. "They say the falls are beautiful," she said a little
breathlessly.

Jeyme peered over her shoulder at her friend and the handsome Reven
and smiled. It was obvious that there was an immediate connection
between them.

Then the falls came into view and Arippa sighed "Oh my," as the sight
almost took her breath away. But her upbringing brought her politely
back to the young man riding next to her. "How did your interview with
Lord Corowal go?"

Reven cocked his head to the side, an easy grin spreading across his
face, "It went well, very well, in fact. It was the first time I'd met
Lord Corowal. He gave me his blessing on Green Valley although he
strongly suggested I quickly marry and produce an heir since there are
few of the Blood left there."

The flush crept up her cheeks even farther when her eyes flew to his
face. "Oh," she said and swallowed. The others had reached the vantage
point and were dismounting. She pulled her runner up to the side and
waited to be helped down. The groom who'd been following them was
already gathering the reins to hold while the Blooded folk went to
view the sights.

Arippa's heart beat faster as she weighed his words. She'd come to
Emerald Falls to allow Namrien to court her and through his own folly
he'd lost his life. Now, here was his cousin, newly confirmed as
Holder and telling her he wanted a wife. Or was that really what he'd
said?
