A Fine night

Writers: Eimi, Emma
Date Posted: 16th January 2006

Characters: Penryn, Carlan
Description: Penryn gives Carlan some assurance before the Welcome Party begins
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 9, day 6 of Turn 3

The guests were due to arrive very shortly, Carlan made one last check of the area where he and the rest of the musicians were to play.

Everything seemed in order, thought the harper as he swiftly tuned his gitar.

"Are you all ready here?" Penryn asked as he sat carefully on a bench near the harper. The steward wondered if it was the mere thought of dancing that was causing that twinge in his knee to cry in protest.

"Just about," replied the harper. "My gitar is tuned, the music arrived in time, and we have a singer arrived especially."

"Wonderful. Make sure you rotate so you can get something to eat. The feast is smelling wonderful."

"I'll make sure of it, I don;t think my wife would forgive me if I didn;t have at least one dance with her. She managed to find someone to watch Ryannae for a candlemark or so," explained the harper.

"How old is Ryannae now?" It just seemed like yesterday she had been born to the young harper and his wife.

"Coming up to three months."

"Three months? Has it been so long? Shards, I can remember the day she was born!" Penryn smiled. Time sure had flown by the last few months, that was for sure.

"So do I." The harper was truly besotted with his daughter, and could, if prompted talk forever about her. However, this was not the time or place. He changed the subject, "Journeyman Reston is an accomplished piper. He said he's learnt all the music we plan to use tonight."

"Ah, he's been here before I believe," Penryn smiled approvingly.

"So he told me, I feel confident in letting him lead some of the music."

"And he can carry the news to the other Holds that the leadership at Garnet Valley is solid. That's important."

"It is indeed," replied the Harper. Garnet Valley was starting to feel like home.

"What are they saying out there, Carlan? About Ishek? And about Garnet Valley? As a Harper I'm sure you know."

"I've not heard too much yet, but one thing I am sure of that tomoroow all the talk will be of this banquet, and possibly some gossip about the death of Weyrwoman Jaela, I believe she was related to Lady Thalia."

Penryn nodded. "Yes, she was Lady Thalia's aunt." He knew she was putting on a brave face, but it would be a long hard night.

"But tonight is meant to be about fun and frivolity, welcoming the new Lord and his sister." "And so it will be. We are counting on you musicians for that."

"I hope so, I've practised long and hard for this."

Penryn stood and put a hand on the Harper's shoulder. "I shouldn't worry, Carlan. We have every confidence in your playing. It will be a fine night."

"I hope so."
