Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 6 of Turn 3
Syntara pulled her jacket a little closer to her body as she leaned against the fence of the feeding grounds. Although she could hardly feel the chill of /between/ or the rush of fighting Thread, the breeze that carried up from the ocean seemed to cut her to the core. She wished Faylith would hurry up and finish her meal so Syntara slink back to the shadows where she felt she belonged ever since her fight with Ar'lis.
Just then, a man leaned against the fence beside her, propping his forearms up against it. "Hey, Syntara," he murmured softly, glancing at her before looking back out towards the dragons on the Grounds.
The world fell away. "Hello, Ar'lis."
Her tone was unreadable. Shards and _shells_... He shook that annoying bronze forelock out of his eyes and glanced at her again. The brief silence between them was deafening. Not that he expected it to be any sharding different. Ar'lis didn't remember much of what had happened that night, but he _did_ know that they'd gotten into a...tiff. Well, maybe it was more of a fight.
Shards.
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Look, Syntara... Whatever I said to you that night, I'm sorry."
"You're sharding right you're sorry." She pushed off the fence and headed back to the Weyr. Faylith would just have to finish alone.
Gritting his teeth, he whirled around, caught up to her, and grabbed her arm before she could retreat completely out of reach. "You're right, all right? I _am_ sorry. I mean it."
** I will not cry...** "How can you be sorry when you don't even remember half of what you said - if that much!?" She wanted so badly to give in and let him hold her, but she couldn't. She wasn't supposed to be that kind of woman and things had changed too much.
His hold on her arm relaxed a little, but he wouldn't let her go. "I can be sorry because I see the look in your eyes." Gently he touched her cheek briefly with the back of his finger.
Then it occurred to her - he didn't deny that he didn't remember anything. Maybe he didn't remember that she had told him she loved him.
Maybe things could still work out. "Ar'lis..." She took a step closer -
but just a step.
Would she let him hold her? He wasn't sure, but he applied a gentle pressure on her arm, lightly drawing her closer.
Not wanting anyone to see her so fragile, but not wanting to run away either, Syntara let him pull her closer; even if things were just all right for now, she needed at least that much - for now.
He wrapped an arm around her and brushed his cheek against the side of her head. He wanted to know what he'd said to her...but he wouldn't ask. Why bring it up? "You want to wait for Faylith? Or do you want to come back up with me?"
"I'd better wait for her." As much as she wanted things to be the same, she didn't want to rush into anything; whether he meant to or not he'd already burnt her once and she wasn't eager to hurt like this again.
"But maybe I can see you tomorrow?"
"Sure, love. Just have Faylith bespeak Zylarth when you're ready." He gave her waist a squeeze before releasing her. He knew it'd be best if she had more time alone... Shards! What did he _say_ to her?
