Distraction during Threadfall is a bad thing

Writers: Ames, Ang
Date Posted: 28th May 2013

Characters: Gelira, S'ber
Description: Dylorth is wounded due to the distraction S'ber and needs Gelira's help
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 12 of Turn 6

It was hot, even high in the sky, as S'ber fed Dylorth another
firestone. Threadfall was always hard but today was worse due to the
high temperature and the fact that Simay was due for a flight.
Sharding green ...

}: Duck! :{

** What? Whoa! **

The Thread slid past him and slammed against the bronze's back.
Dylorth screamed in pain before they went ~between~. When they
reappeared, S'ber looked back and saw that a piece of Dylorth's
wingsail had a tear so he had the bronze relay to the line leader that
they were returning to the Weyr. ** I am so sorry, love **

}: It's all right. I'll be fine. :{ the bronze gritted out, landing as
close as he could to the dragonhealers' area.

"Help ... I need help!" S'ber called out as he slid down and began
undoing the straps.

Gelira heard the call and hurried over to help, so many of the other
dragonhealers were busy dealing with the influx of injuries from the
Threadfall. A few others had joined her when the call came, but a
rather major Threadscore had just come in and many were needed to calm
the dragon and rider.

"Quickly, tell me where he's hurt," She didn't want to be brusque, but
she needed to apply numbweed immediately in order to be able to
further treat him. Her hands were already slipping into the bag on her
side where she carried the numbweed for days of Threadfall.

Asking Dylorth to lower himself for the girl, S'ber answered, "Left
side wingsail, near the joint. There's a tear." He pulled the last
of the straps off and tossed them aside before offering his hand to
help her up.

Dylorth bugled in pain as he stretched his wing out and bent his leg
for the pair. }: It hurts! :{

"I know it hurts, big guy. We're working as fast as we can," he said
out loud for Gelira's benefit.

She moved quickly. "Thank you." Then looking at the bronze she spoke
to him softly. "Dylorth, I'm going to help you." Her hands already
smeared with the numbweed, Gelira made quick work of rubbing it around
the entire injured area, all the while taking time to assess how bad
the injury was and what further treatment would be needed.

The sudden loss of pain cut Dylorth's cry mid-sound and he visibly
relaxed under Gelira's efficient hands. }: Thank you :{ he bespoke
even though she couldn't hear him.

"He thanks you," S'ber said as he watched her, holding the wing up
when the bronze started getting tired.

Gelira nodded. "He's doing very well," she replied then addressed
Dylorth, "You've been a _very_ good patient." She continued to apply
the numbweed making sure she hadn't missed any spots.

"You're very lucky," she addressed them both. "The score went straight
through in one spot only. It's not as severe as it could be and the
wound is not so large that it should need stitches. It will mean you
won't be flying for awhile though until the wing completely heals. I
best have one of the journeyman examine it just to make sure that my
assessment is correct." She moved back to the ground and indicated he
could rest the wing a bit while she went to check with one of the
other dragonhealers.

S'ber was caressing Dylorth's headknob as Gelira described the wound.
He wouldn't admit it, but he was grateful that the bronze couldn't fly
since a certain important gold would be rising soon.

That stirred the bronze and he exhaled sharply. }: Shard it, Simay! :{

The rider smiled then quickly apologized to Gelira. "I'm sorry. I'm
not making light of the situation. Thank you for your help and I'd be
grateful for the journeyman's examination," he said gruffly, a lot of
emotion in his voice.

Gelira hurried off and came back moment's later with a journeyman
healer. After he had examined Dylorth and her work, he nodded and
indicated she could proceed with directions and what not. Then after
briefly talking to S'ber for a moment, he excused himself to tend to

the many other injuries that had come in.

"Well," Gelira said, stepping up to the pair again, "It looks like I
was right. It's not major, but it will put you out of the fighting
wings for a bit until Dylorth's wing heals." She gave the dragon an
understanding smile. Then with a jar in her hands, she handed it to
S'ber. "You'll need to apply the numbweed at least four times a day,

maybe more, for the first two or three days, then you should be able
to judge when Dylorath needs the numbweed and apply it as he needs it.
You should check back in here in a sevenday just to make sure
everything is healing as expected, and then we'll know better when
you'll be ready to fly again."

He didn't really think there would be a problem with Gelira's work but
it was still nice to know that the journeyman agreed with what she'd
done. The brief chat left him relieved and collapsed against the
bronze bulk of his lifemate with a sigh as he accepted the jar of
numbweed. "Thank you so much, Gelira. This is the worst injury he's
received but I'm glad that it was actually so minor."

}: Speak for yourself :{ the bronze huffed, exhaling strongly on them both.

"Baby," he said as he pushed away. "If there's ever anything you
need, Gelira, please ask," S'ber said with a warm smile, Dylorth
already on the move.

She was pleased that the injury hadn't been severe. She smiled at the
pair as they started to leave. "I'll keep that in mind S'ber," she
replied. "Now, go," she shooed him, "Go take care of Dylorth and make
sure he takes it easy for a few days."
