It was the first time in what felt like forever that she _wasn't_
guarding Rhosyn's door or caring for the Weyrwoman. She was learning
alot and didn't mind the work at all, but it was nice to get away for
a bit.
"Gelira!" K'mai came up behind her and slipped an arm around her
shoulders. "How have you been?"
She startled a bit at the arm around her shoulders. Turning, however,
she rolled her eyes and batted at him. "K'mai, you startled me!"
He laughed. "Sorry. Just eager to see you."
"Me?" She said with a hint of amusement in her voice. "Why are you so
eager to see me?"
"I haven't seen you in a while and wanted to catch up." The bluerider
smiled. "So what have you been up to?"
She blew out her breath at that. "You don't even _want_ to know. I've
basically been Rhosyn's right hand since her injury. Between that,
candidate duties, _and_ my continued studies, I feel like I haven't
had time to breath, let alone eat and sleep!"
"You poor thing." K'mai waited a beat before asking what he really
wanted. "So what _is_ wrong with the Weyrwoman? No one seems to know
for sure and the rumors are just wild."
Rhosyn heaved a slight sigh. She'd been answering these types of
questions for so many days now. It was frustrating at times.
"I really can't say, K'mai. I mean, it's nothing serious, just that
she can't be up and about for awhile," She knew it was a weak
explanation, but it was the best she could do.
"Her Queen has been assuring all the dragons that her rider isn't in
danger, but we're still all very concerned." K'mai started steering
her toward the dining cavern. It was between meal times so it wouldn't
be crowded. "Someone told me K'sedel hurt her during the Flight, but I
find that hard to believe. The greenriders I talked to said he was as
passionate as anyone during dragonlust, but not rough. And if he _did_
hurt her ... I really would expect him to feel bad about it, and he
seems fine."
Gelira allowed herself to be steered. As K'mai spoke she shook her
head. She _definitely_ didn't want that to be the impression people
had of what happened.
"No, no. That's not the issue at all," Gelira replied. "I mean, I
don't know the details of their Flight, but that isn't why the
Weyrwoman is ill now."
"Ah, that's good to know." K'mai was glad that silly rumor was untrue.
"Is it firehead? No, that can't be it. Everyone would be more
concerned if it was."
She couldn't help but be amused at the little guessing game. She shook
her head no at his last guess.
"No, it's definitely not that, thank goodness," Gelira replied as they
approached the dining area.
There were a few weyrfolk about, but he spotted an empty table. "Hmmm
.... A cold or flu? Is she protecting the weyrfolk by staying away and
not spreading the infection?"
Gelira followed him towards the table. She shook her head no. "That's
not it either. I wish I could say, but I've promised I wouldn't.
Rhosyn has been nothing if not good to me of late, I don't want to
betray the trust she's put in me." Gelira hardly even realized she was
referring to the Weyroman by name as easily as if they had been
friends for Turns. Somewhere in the time she'd been working with her,
she had grown more comfortable around Rhosyn, a sense of ease with the
goldrider.
"Oh, no, of course not. I wouldn't want you to betray her trust." He
put a hand to his chest. "I just want to put some of these awful
rumors to rest."
She chuckled a bit at his gesture. "I know, I know. Everyone is just
curious, but _I_ can't tell you what happened, okay?" She gave him a
look and a wink to let him know that she herself couldn't reveal the
truth, but that didn't mean he couldn't keep guessing if he chose to
do so.
"Hmm." He frowned in thought, but his eyes were bright. "There's
another rumor, that perhaps she was pregnant."
Gelira shook her head. "I've heard that one already." She recalled the
aftermath of the encounter with the Dolphin Cove Weyrleader. "I can
tell you that to my knowledge that is not the case." Of course Gelira
didn't know for certain if something like that was _also_ involved,
but she would never dare ask either.
"How disappointing. That was a particularly juicy one, with the
Dolphin Cove Weyrleader coming here and creating a fuss and all." That
was K'mai's favorite, even if parts of it were too ridiculous to
believe.
"Well, he _did_ come, but everyone knows that," Gelira replied. She
took another bite of the mashed tubers and watched him, wondering if
the questioning over Rhosyn was over or if he would continue.
"Oh, yes, but the juicy gossip is about exactly _why_ he was here." It
was fun to have a Weyrwoman that lent herself to so many rumors.
"That is true," Gelira replied with a slight snort. "It's all _anyone_
can talk about and _lots_ of people have been trying to get me to
spill the beans about what's happening."
"I know you would never betray the Weyrwoman's trust, but do you think
the rest of us will learn the truth? Or is it such a deep, dark secret
that we'll be left guessing forever?" K'mai put his elbows on the
table and rested his chin on his hands.
Gelira paused and thought about that, "Well I don't know for sure, but
I would imagine that once she's less embarrassed about things, then
the secret will get out. A few people already know. It won't take long
before others hear the truth."
Embarrassed? K'mai filed that bit of information away. "I can't wait
to find out. Sometimes the truth is even better than the rumors."
Gelira shrugged, not certain exactly how to answer that comment.
Everyone would know soon enough, she was sure of that.
