Description: R'sedel has private chat with U'das after the wing meeting.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 16 of Turn 6
Notes: Follows Wing Meeting
R'sedel had said nothing during the Wing meeting. While he loved to
lighten the mood, even he could understand the seriousness of the
situation. He would much rather make his feelings to the man directly
rather than follow the protocols of a Wing meeting. And so, he invited
himself back to the Wingleader's office after the meeting broke,
catching the door just as it was about to swing closed and slipped into
the room behind U'das. "Well," he said by way of announcing himself,
"what a messy pile of wherry dung, eh?"
"R'sedel, you stole the words out of my mind," U'das replied, giving the
greenrider a lopside, sad grin.
"What do you have to drink in this place?" the greenrider asked as he
hitched a leg to sit on the corner of the desk.
"I have rum, whiskey, brandy and some horrible stuff left over from my
birthday party," U'das replied, rummaging through his selection. "Wine
or ale, no, has to be asked from the kitchen."
"Well, hurry up and choose one while you can still read the labels," the
greenrider said with a rather irreverent grin. He had never been one to
stand on ceremony when he could help it, and they definitely needed to
lighten the mood at least a little.
"You don't really need eyes for that," U'das said. He pulled out the
cork, and inhaled the fragnance coming from the bottle. "My nose works just
fine." He poured them both a gererous shots.
"Then here's to the four sense you have left," R'sedel said, clinking
his glass against the bronzerider's. "Now tell me truly how you're taking
this news. And don't give me that 'we'll make the best of things' crack
dust
you gave us in the meeting. How are you _really_?"
"Still in shock, I think. I really don't have the understanding what it
means yet." U'das tilted his head back and swallowed it all in one go.
"It's gradual, right? So you'll have some time to adjust?" R'sedel
did the same and then reached for the bottle and poured them each a drink.
"Yes, it's gradual. Right now, I only have trouble seeing in dim light
and when I'm tired. I've used glasses for reading for few Turns now," U'das
told him and picked up the new drink. "Even the healers can't say how
bad it will be in the end."
"Well, I know for a fact you're a man who can find his way around in
the dark," the greenrider said with a saucy wink. U'das had caught his
green before, and R'sedel had relished every minute of it. "So you're sent
into the retiree's Wing. Then what? What do you have planned to do with
yourself?"
"Actually, I'm not going to retired wing, not yet. I'll be teaching
Weyrlings as long as I have some vision left," U'das corrected.
"Good, you can take over for M'galec. He might be a 'brilliant
surgeon' but he's sharding fool when it comes to weyrlings." R'sedel had
heard
several horror stories from new recruits in the Wings.
"Hah, I'm not going to take over anybody, I won't be holding any rank.
Although, it remains to be see how hard it will be not give advice to
those younger bronzeriders."
"Tell them how good male greens are," R'sedel said with a wistful sigh.
"Not all are as accepting as you are when they wake up next to one of
us. We know it's just Flight lust, but we can have our fantasy, can't we?"
"You never change, do you?" U'das chuckled. It was hardly a secret he
liked the Greenrider. If anybody could cheer him up, it was R'sedel.
"Well, one good thing, if you go completely blind, you don't have to
look at your Flight partner. As long as I don't speak, you can pretend I'm
anyone you want." R'sedel wiggled a little with pleasure as he
remembered one particular Flight with the handsome bronzerider.
"Oh, you're incurable," U'das just laughed.
"It's not my fault you're so good looking. What can I say, I like bald
men! I think they're sexy." He rubbed his own head with it's receding
hairline. "So what do your kids say about all this?" R'sedel asked,
picking up a paperweight from his desk and turning it over in his hands.
"They're shocked and upset I didn't tell them anything earlier," U'das
replied. "I got a whole, lenghty scolding from my daughter."
"I figure you've done enough for this Weyr and for Pern. You're going
to live to see your grandchildren and their children all Impress while
you're sitting back and collecting greenriders. Well," R'sedel
corrected himself with a grin, "maybe you won't _see_ it, but you'll hear
about it at least."
"Aren't you a painting a pretty picture. I bet you wanted to be part of
that collection," U'das said.
"I'd slip in from time to time if you'd let me. I'd be quick. You
wouldn't even see me," R'sedel said with a wink.
"Hah! I'll drink for that," U'das lifted his glass up.
R'sedel was sad that he would lose U'das as his Wingleader, but that he
would never lose his sense of humor.
