Description: Onnyth clutch finally hatches
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 24 of Turn 6
It was fairly warm outside, even if Rukbat was high above the cloud layer,
almost refusing to show it's face to the Weyr below.
By mid afternoon, people knew what was happening. Onnyth had started with a
gentle hum at first, which was soon picked up and seemed to start echoing
around the weyrbowl.
Teseada hurried to find her best gather finery, then set out to find K'ale.
Imalkyth had notified K'ale almost at the same time as Teseada found out.
He'd dressed in his best that he'd had made for this occasion and dashed
down the hall. Whipping around a corner he crashed into Tes coming from the
other direction. An involuntary "Opf," came out as he tried to catch her.
"I'm okay, "she said as she wobbled a little, reaching out to try and grab
onto his arm for support. "It's these shoes."
"Oh good," he chuckled. "Sorry about that." Then he looked down and smiled.
"Very pretty shoes. Are you ready?" He turned and offered his arm.
Teseada took a deep breath. "I am now," she replied taking his arm. "You
look good, is that a new tunic?"
"It is," he smiled. He didn't want to tell her Cardella had helped him pick
out the fabric at a recent gather but the weaver had done a great job with
the decoration. He'd even woven some special trim with the Weyr's colors and
the brown ribbon to signify his lifemate. Tes looked beautiful as always at
least to his eye. He winked and walked toward the hatching grounds.
"Shall we?" she asked with a smile. "The crowds are gathering already, I
just hope everything goes well out there."
"It will," he said and patted her hand where it clutched his arm. "I'm here
for you Tes. Whatever happens." He privately hoped for no duds. He'd watched
the small clutch for days and every egg seemed to have life. But at this
point the proof would be in happy pairs. He wasn't going to let them steal
her joy today.
By this time, the pair had reached their seats, and she could see the
candidates gathering, ready to be signalled onto the sands. Teseada could
see the Weyrlingmaster and his staff gathered ready to help the new pairs.
As the remaining dignitaries filed in the signal was given, and the
youngsters walked slowly onto the sands, fanning out around the edges of the
sands.
K'ale nodded to the Weyrleaders before taking his seat. They were in
their usual place of honor and while he couldn't really tell their
moods he still knew they'd been preparing for the worst. But he
decided he wasn't going to dwell on it and instead enjoy the
spectacle.
Onnyth's eggs weren't going to wait though. A smallish one at the front
began to rock, and then a crack appeared, through which a small, blue
foreleg emerged.
"Oh blue," he said with a smile and watched as the first impression
took place. The kid was hesitant at first but then his face took on
that look that told the world around him he'd found the ultimate.
"What is his name?"
"Jykri, I think. I wonder what he'll choose to call himself now., " Teseada
said as she watched the new pair be helped off the sands.
"Oh, I think I remember him," said K'ale. He was fairly certain the
new rider had once helped him to wash Imalkyth. His attention whipped
back to the eggs a moment later when another cracked open and the
crowd sighed their approval of a new brown.
And that led to a small delicately formed green emerging, making her
determined way to a tallish boy who looked to be on his last chance on the
stands. The look of instant love on his rather plain face suddenly made him
look handsome as he threw his arms around her.
"Oh," he said. "She's beautiful." He turned and smiled at Tes.
"She is," came the reply as another egg split, this time green showing
though the crack. "Look," Teseada pointed, "I think that one is going to be
tiny."
He looked at the tiny green but though she was very small he nodded as
his chest filled with pride, this might be a little clutch but it was
his. Though he wasn't certain of those were his feelings or
Imalkyth's. He knew his grin probably looked a little silly but for
once he didn't care.
"I don't think that girl cares," Teseada could see the look on Paetri's
face. It was one that was common to all the newly impressed.
"Oh I doubt it. I'm glad she Impressed though," he said. "She's such a
shy little thing. They'll be good for eachother."
There were fewer and fewer eggs still to hatch from their small clutch
and soon it was down to just two.
Finally one of them showed some signs of movement, and at last a brown head
emerged. The crowd gasped as he made his awkward way onto the sands, the
straight as an arrow he found his way to a startled looking boy barely old
enough to be on the sands.
While that was happening, another tiny green emerged from the last egg, this
one seemed shy and somewhat overawed by happenings, even as she looked into
the eyes of Daret.
K'ale reached over to squeeze Teseada's hand. All the eggs had hatched
without a single dud. He could be proud of that at least. "Shall we?"
"Yes," she said with a smile of relief. It was over with, and there were
some very happy new weyrlings. Maybe not as many as predicted, but a good
looking class none the less.
