H'vack sent a message through Rilarth to have D'lorn meet him in his
office. He needed to get to know his new Weyrlingmaster Third and make
sure that they would work together well. The eggs on the Sands were
due to hatch soon, so they needed to be working closely together to
ensure that all went well during the early days with the new weyrlings.

The greenrider had heard there was a new boss and he was curious to meet
him. D'lorn checked on Villith then headed down to the barracks and up to the
Weyrlingmaster's office. He gave one knock on the side of the open door. "Sir."

"D'lorn, I take it," H'vack greeted the rider. "Come in and have a
seat. We should talk." He waited until D'lorn had entered before
continuing. "I don't know how things were handled in the past, but
it's important that we all understand each other so we can avoid as
many injuries and issues as possible. Perhaps you can get me up to
speed on how your previous Weyrlingmaster handled things?" He'd been
curious for some time, but hadn't had the right person to ask. Some
were easy on the weyrlings, others were hard, others handled things in

entirely unique and original ways. He needed to know what his staff
was used to so he could better prepare them to work with him.

"To be honest, sir, we all just had our assigned lessons and duties. If I
was assigned to run a lesson, I ran it as I saw fit. Some of us worked more
with specific classes so we knew the kids better and knew their strengths and
weaknesses and could better encourage their development." D'lorn didn't
know what else to say really.

"Alright then," H'vack replied, noting that it sounded like they would

need to have further meetings so he could lay out his expectations. He
wanted them to work as a team, though that still meant each of them
would have unique responsibilities.

"We can hammer out the details among the staff together. I am tough
and expect the weyrlings and my staff to follow my directions without
question, but that doesn't mean I am not open to suggestion and
counsel." He knew he would get his point across. He was more than
willing to discuss with anyone, just not to the point where it
undermined him in front of the weyrlings or the rest of the staff.

"Normally, the Second and Third would take on the junior weyrlings,
while I work more closely with the senior. However, for the upcoming
hatching, I would like us all to to work closely together. We need to
get to know each other's styles, find out where our own weaknesses and
strengths as a team are. What would you say your strengths are D'lorn?
In terms of teaching the weyrlings, that is."

"Mmmm...well being the only chromatic on staff means I give those riders
someone to relate to. I can discuss and give examples of how it is to train
and take care of a green as well as...handle the Flight topic for the young
males who might find themselves in a new situation. I am also neither holdbred
or weyrbred so I'm completely objective when it comes to certain issues."
D'lorn was proud of that fact.

"Aye, that is a strength to have in a staff like ours. You'll do well
with relating to the various riders and helping understand the ways of
the Weyr that will affect them all greatly." H'vack contemplated one
thing D'lorn had said, "Not holdbred _or_ weyrbred? Where then did you
grow up?" He found he was rather curious.

"I'm traderbred," he said simply with a small smile.

"Very interesting," H'vack replied. He didn't honestly know too many
traders who'd come to be dragonriders. "Well, that could definitely be
helpful. Very helpful indeed."

Sitting back in his chair he thought for a moment, "So, with the
hatching coming we'll have a lot of preparations to make. I've already
planned for extra training sessions for our candidates. They need
endurance and strength training to survive those early sevendays and
we both know it. Perhaps you can check in with some of them yourself,
talk to them, help them get over their nerves a bit. One in
particular, Bedjon. Seems to know what's expected of him and all that,
but I have a feeling his preference is towards green. Though he didn't
expressly say as much. Might help to have someone for him to talk to
who understands."

"I've met the young man. He's a holder but I think he came...to understand
himself before he came here." D'lorn had gotten that idea since the boy didn?t
seem as timid as the others.

"Good, that was my impression of him as well. Do you know all the
candidates well then? I've been meeting with them regularly to get to
know them better. Can you share any information you might have that
would help us in preparing them?" H'vack wasn't about to negate
D'lorn's experience here at River Bluff. He knew how things should be
done, but there were always issues each Weyr dealt with.

"I wouldn't say I know them all well but I know each of them to a point.
Since Lenala's Vilarth was the last one to have a Hatching, I've been dealing
more with that weyrling class than the candidates. The Headwoman has
had more dealings with them I'd say. As far as preparation, the ones that
aren't Weyrbred probably need the full gamut while the ones that are should
be heavily physically trained more than anything else." That was the
greenrider's thought.

"Very good," H'vack replied. "We'll all have the chance to get to know
them better when they Impress. I've got my doubts about a few of them,
but in the end it's up to the dragons and not up to me."

"Indeed. We usually have a few hard cases though, but we'll get through it.
We have enough time before they'll be near old enough for the Fighting Wings
to get it straight." Nodding to himself, D'lorn thought maybe the new
Weyrlingmaster wouldn't be so bad. He seemed like an okay guy.
