K'mai

K'mai

K'mai got E'rae into bed and slid in next to him. "I hope you
don't mind, but I'm staying."

The bluerider looked back at him blearily. He was still in shock and
she hadn't woken up and the healers wouldn't let him near her. But he
had duties tomorrow. He had to sleep.

}:We will get through this.:{ Leith told him quietly from the
ledge.
**I know buddy.**

"My body is tired and I know I need sleep, but my mind just keeps
going around and around..." He turned over and pushed into K'mai's
space, seeking the comfort that Bahji had provided usually.
"What if...what if she finds out and it kills her? What if she
wants to go home? Or even..what if we can't catch this piece of...and they
come after her again for whatever reason?"

K'mai put a comforting arm around him. "We'll keep her safe until we
find out exactly what happened." He found it hard to believe anyone
would do this to a sweet girl like Bahji, but at the same time he
didn't doubt E'rae had found evidence. "Someone will always be with
her, people we know we can trust."

"You know...she was so excited..to have a baby." He didn't want to have
to be the one to tell her. And maybe-maybe he had been excited too.

K'mai swallowed. It was so sad he didn't want to think about it.
"Maybe she can try again, if she wants to."

He didn't know if he could. Not after all of it. She was more vulnerable pregnant,
but he didn't voice that concern to K'mai just then. "We told Werenn. She won't
understand."

"Try to get some sleep." K'mai didn't know what else to say.

He did. He tried, but he was just lying there. He felt Leith's tired thoughts
when he pressed in that direction. Sighing, he was quiet for awhile. Then he
whispered, "What if she doesn't make it through the night?"

"She'll be fine. The healers have saved people from far worse." K'mai
hoped it was true. He'd seen people survive terrible threadscores and
wanted to believe Bahji wasn't as hurt as that.

"I hope so. So many women have died in childbirth and losing a baby
can be sort of the same thing." He knew it meant blood which was tricky.
And with falls, there could be blood inside. E'rae closed his eyes and
tried to hope. He had survived his own Threadscore so maybe she would be
okay.

"We have some of the best healers on Pern. They'll take care of
her." Poor, sweet Bahji.
