Fielton snuck into the kitchen after lunch, pleased by the fact that the serving girls didn't scatter from his path the way they'd done in the past.
The fact that he'd been more pleasant to deal with since his marriage didn't occur to him... Fielton was sure that Cinale had finally gotten around to training the girls not to be such ninnies.

He found the cook at one of the tables, and gave her an unusually large smile--suspiciously large. "Cinale... how's my favorite cook today?"

One brow rose and she slowly raised her head to look at the Hallmaster and his suspicous-looking, large smile. "All right, Fielton. You've never been so flattering to me in all my Turns here in the kitchens. What do you want, hmm?" Her eyes glinted with amusement at his expression.

Fielton held onto his smile for a moment longer and then dropped it. "Fine.
Daigoro tells me Miryene wants to wed Jio. You know them both, don't you?
Tell me everything you know."

"I have an idea. Why don't you tell me everything _you_ know, and then I'll fill in the blanks for you." She smiled at him.

"Well..." Discarding everything he knew about Jio as a Vintner, he concentrated on what he knew about Jio as a man. "There was some rumour about the two of them being involved, but Daigoro assures me it wasn't true.
Other than that, I don't know anything about Jio that doesn't concern his craft..."

"Jio is a good man. I know that he cares for Miryene, and will support her and her baby."

"I thought Jhonnel was a good man as well," Fielton replied bluntly. "If I let this happen, I won't be sending her into another mess, will I?" He knew plenty of people blamed him for forcing Miryene and Jhonnel into marriage perhaps more quickly than was advisable, but the speed with which she'd turned up pregnant made him think he'd made the right choice at the time.
Now, though... well, looking back, he was willing to accept a little guilt, even if he wouldn't admit it.

Why did everyone keep asking her this? She lifted her chin, believing in the faith she had in her friends. "No, you won't be sending her into another mess, Fielton."

Fielton considered her for a moment and then nodded. "Fine. I'll trust you."
He paused for a moment, and then his face grew sly. "So... do you have any cookies left over from the other day?"

"I might... Why?" She grinned at him. "Do you want some?"

"Maybe a few..." He grinned at her. "And I wanted to bring some up to Badia, too. She likes sweet things."

"Of course." Her smile and tone were deceptively vague as she went over to the counter to put a dozen or so on an extra platter. "Here you are," she smiled, handing over the plate. "Anything else I can get you? Wine? Bread?
More opinions?"

"I think I'm good for now," Fielton replied meekly, a tone of voice heard by no one except the woman who supplied him with sweets. "I don't want to spoil my appetite for dinner, after all!" With sweets _or_ opinions.
